Ahead of them were about ten brightly coloured wagons. He took up the rear of the wagon train along this minor road that would eventually lead into the town.
This was his second season with this circus and he loved every day of it. Unknown to him, his life was about to change radically.
“Hey Josh” yelled Mojo, the leader of the train “I want to talk to you about learning to do the trapeze act.” He felt the cold hand of fear on his back and feet and he began to tremble.
“Arrrrgh” he stuttered “I will let you know Mojo.”
“Why?” queried Mojo “This is an increase in pay and stardom at last! Since you joined the team I noticed how well you do the manoeuvres.”
In haste, Josh galloped away. He needed to be alone to hide what he was really feeling. He was terrified of the thoughts that were screaming into his mind from the past. He was shaking.
In a circus about five years ago, he was in a trapeze act
and there was a terrible personal tragedy that he never shared with anyone. Over time he hid it well, but now it was all coming back….
Mojo found him at the next rest spot.
“Well Joshi,” he queried using his pet name “We need you. You have the right build for this.”
What Josh could not tell him was that he used to be a trapeze artist. In fact, his family were trapezists and he learned the craft as a boy. He, his father and mother was a well know team, until the day he dropped her. His release was untimely and even with the net to catch her she was hurt and never recovered, or so he thought. He did not wait around. He fled. The death of his mother years ago traumatised him deeply. He frequently would say to himself, “I was responsible.”
He had fled from home and was living under a false name. Mojo’s question woke the memories in him. He began to wonder what his father was up to.
“Was he still alive?” he wondered.
He returned to the travelling group and when they arrived at the next town he decided to make a phone call. “I hope the number is the same,” he said under his breath. To his surprise, his mother answered the phone. He slammed the phone down. He was in shock.
Later he made another call. This time he did not slam the phone down. “ Oh, Mother! Mother, I am so glad that you are alive!” he declared. His joy returned that day. He was openly weeping as he returned to the camp.
“Son, Mother had not died as you supposed.” Pop told him.
“The day you left home, Pastor and the elders came to the hospital and prayed over her, and yes, you guessed right, she was healed! We looked everywhere for you. Come home, son.” pleaded Pop. “Forgive yourself.” And he did!
The skeleton hidden in his closet had been exposed and annihilated. He was released from the fear and the shame for something he did not even do. He was able to return home and to trapezing. He had been gone for five years.
He rededicated his life to the Lord and would give his testimony whenever he felt the Lord wanted him to. One night he had a dream and he saw the words “Trapezist 4Him”.
The next day he introduced the idea to his family. “Oh yes,” squealed Mom. So their act became known. It was also an ideal opportunity for testimony and for praying for others. Over the years many came for prayer and to faith in Christ. Their motto was from Romans 8:28 [KJV}
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
