My name is Rachael. I remember often wondering what it would be like to be without shame. The heavy hemp curtains on the front windows did not let much light into our home. I was homeschooled by my Mom because she and my father did not want me to be seen except by loved ones like Grandma.
On festival days I would be allowed out but I had to wear a scarf that covered most of my face. I noticed a few other people in the same guise. It allowed a certain freedom of movement.
I did not see many of my relatives and I stayed in my room when visitors came.
Grandma came to visit often and her frequent hugs and her ardent ‘I love you Rachael’ warmed my heart and made my days happy.
She taught me how to knit and weave. Grandma’s handcrafts were highly sought after in her small community. She and my father and mother taught me many Bible verses and stories which I found interesting. My interest especially peaked when I read how Jesus healed the sick.
I remember once saying to a local ‘pretend friend’ “My parents are not cruel. They are trying to protect me.” Living in the rural UK in early 1800 was a difficult time. Smallpox was not yet wiped out.
The single mirror in our home was proof. You could say that I was covered in ‘spots’ or that I had an ugly rash? Many had.
“Oh my! She has a bad rash!” exclaimed many. I overheard it so many times.
So often I would rush indoors weeping, so my parents did the next best thing and kept me safe.
Years passed, it seems. My life changed when a preacher came to our town and held Christian revivals. He had been a missionary in Africa and India and had healed many in Jesus Name. He would go into towns and villages and hold revivals and prayed for many people.
My parents were sceptical of him, so I slipped out one day and went to the tent location. I wore my scarf.
“Anyone needing healing by the Lord Jesus, come forward!” said the preacher.His words resounded in me. Without volition I found myself moving forward to the front.
As I relate this story it is now ten years later and I am blessed to be able to say that I was totally healed that night. The scars disappeared. “No more rash!”
That night I made a deep commitment to follow Christ. As my mother often said
“They melted away.” My life became His.
I too became a missionary and prayed for the sick whenever I could.
In support of the authenticity of the Christian healing gift; Jesus the Messiah spent a lot of his time healing.
“And great crowds came to him, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and they put them at his feet, and he healed them,..{Matthew 15: 30}”
In his own words;
“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.” {John 14:12}
And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up….. [ESV James 5:15]
