That Tuesday she snuggled into her favorite corner chair next to the window so she had plenty of light. The lunch line was dwindling and her break was almost up, but she didn’t notice. Ever since she learned to read, quite early actually, she could distract herself from what was going on around her, even while eating a TV dinner. Fighting. Yelling. Slamming doors. None of them had flustered her.
But all of a sudden, he ambled into her life. Not the tall, dark and handsome type everyone raves over, but the “go skating on a frozen river and maybe pull your pigtails” type. Not your classic gentleman, but he definitely seemed to behave like one.
Joy wondered how she could approach him. Not only was she like a book without a spine, he was of another world. If only she could just go home, step into her wardrobe, and find him, then they could live happily together. Of course, he would not have a mad wife hiding in a locked tower. No, his love would be faithfulness itself.
She shook her head. Who was she kidding? If they were left alone on an island, he probably wouldn’t notice her unless she covered herself in stinking whale flesh. Maybe she should have the letter L for loser embroidered across her chest. Joy sighed and began to consume her novel again, but thoughts of him enticed her.
What would she say to him if she could manage it?
“Do you want to come hang out laundry in the rain with me?”
No, of course not, she didn’t have red pigtails.
“Can we take a dip in that chocolate river over there?”
No way she could get away with that one.
Maybe the truth would work. “My hands are empty, except for my books, do you want to come read with me?”
Joy shrugged her shoulders and gathered her things. One day she might meet the man of her dreams, but right now she needed to get to class.
As soon as class started, she regretted her decision to come. Why did her professor pick that day to give a quiz? If she got more than an C, then she would be happy.
After the torture was over, Joy gathered the books and papers that had slid out of her bag. She was determined to escape, but the student sitting behind her tapped her on the shoulder.
“How do you think you did on the quiz? I didn’t remember any of that stuff!”
Joy picked at the corners of the novel she held in her hand, “I know what you mean, but I think I’m a bit distracted today.”
He peeked into her eyes, “Anything you might want to talk about over a cup of coffee? I know this great bookshop around the corner.”
“Ummm…maybe, that is my favorite place.”
“Really? I’ve never seen you in there.”
“Well, I normally hide on the window seat on the second floor.”
“Oh, yeah, it seems like a really cozy place to read.” His chocolate brown eyes implored hers.
Joy swallowed slowly, “You can…you can try to see if you like it, too.”
A smile lit up his face, “I’d like that. I’m right in the middle of Great Expectations.”
As she followed him out, she wondered if maybe she should stick to nonfictional personalities. Although one never knows if a navy captain might return and declare his unbroken devotion.
