Jokingly my daughter Siara yanked at her young brother Trev’s shirt tail and ran into her room. She was 5 years older and was good at and enjoyed playing tricks on him.
From the kitchen, I heard her squeal of delight and his yell of frustration, “Not again! Mom, tell her to stop!”
He was seven years old and soon would be as tall as she was. Out of the corner of my eyes, I saw him huddle on the side of her door. Siara did what she always did. Sneakily she emerged with her usual grin and cunningly he leapt out and pulled her hair. Now they were equal and could laugh together or fight.
I knew what to do to distract them.
“Ice cream, anyone?” It worked.
“Oh, the joys of motherhood” I muttered to myself.

Over time, as they grew older, their jostling and ‘fights’ continued but it was always done playfully. I remember occasions when she would buy him gifts from his favourite store and he would smilingly run off to play with them. In her early twenties, he became her strong defender in home ‘quarrels’.
When she brought her husband-to-be to meet us I remember him saying
“I like him. He is a good guy”.
My anxious mother heart suffered the great anguish of uncertainty in those early years of courtship.
Eventually, Trev was one of Siara's escorts when her father walked her 'down the aisle'.
“Oh, the joys of motherhood!”

Yielding our children to the will and purposes of God requires humility and submission. My favourite prayer has become The Lord’s Prayer because it enables me to personalise the words to every member of our family. My thoughts are that if it was Jesus’ prayer, then it’s good enough for our family.
Thankfully our children are now best friends. He is a frequent visitor to her new home and they have common interests. On reflection, I believe the key to deep abiding joy in the Lord is yielding to His will knowing that according to Paul.
*“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
Finally, I would like to say that to say that I am in total peace and that my joy is complete but like our children, my husband and I, we are ‘a work in progress’.
Oh, the joys of life, of marriage, of serving the Lord, of loving my neighbour and on and on….
