“Where were you going?” they asked, as they helped to get him up, surprised that his answer was the direction they had come from. “But where did you come from?” elicited the same answer. “Do you know where you live?” was the next question. It soon appeared that the man had no idea where he was or how he had got there, beyond that he was on his scooter and heading for the seafront – he thought. From there he supposed he would find his way home, but he was then about six miles from the coastal town he mentioned and heading further inland.
He was my husband, and I had spent about two hours looking for him in our hometown! He was in the first throes of dementia and I had asked him to wait for me while I went into a building for no more than five minutes. He was in the obstinate and independent stage and had decided that he could manage on his own. He had crossed busy roads, and travelled where there was not even a footpath, even crossing a set of traffic lights presumably thinking he was in a car!
My brother and I had driven up and down street after street until I received a phone call from our home number to say Dennis was at home! The good Samaritans had arranged the temporary care of his scooter, loaded him into their car and worked out his possible address from what he was able to tell them. They stayed for coffee, came back the next day to see how we were and became like a second family. They are friends indeed and I believe used by God to be His instruments of provision.
Eons before Google came up with the World Wide Web, not only had the spider been created but I believe the web concept was used by Almighty God in his linking people together in terms of friendship. Much more in modern terms, with the advent of high technology, relationships are built across and between continents and countries. Many friends may feel they were connected by circumstances or coincidences though I have realised that coincidences are merely incidents coincided by the Almighty hand.
Darren and Emma have been towers of strength over the years we have known them. They have accompanied us to the hospital when emergencies have arisen, helped in numerous ways as Dennis’ dementia worsened, and have stood in for our adult children spread throughout the world. How could we have met them if they had not gone out that day to buy pig food? And how could we have helped them in times of difficulty if we had not known them and their circumstances?
Unfortunately, they have not yet accepted that their outing that day was not accidental.
A few days ago I was considering how another dear friend had come into my life. We had met at work and would probably have remained work acquaintances had she not suffered a similar difficult situation that I had also experienced. What a privilege to be considered a friend able to help meet her needs.
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.m 2 Corinthians 1:3-4
