Besides the spoken word was the written word, first credited to the Mesopotamians who recognised the need for goods to be identified in the realms of ownership or responsibility in handling for trade purposes. Accounts were to be kept and possibly numbers were a priority before words. The earliest texts discovered so far were found at Uruk, dating back to around 3,400 BC. * The transport of the written word, as it progressed, would have been on clay tablets, stamp or cylinder seals, and later, scrolls of papyrus, carried by riders on camel or horseback.
How far we have progressed through the many centuries since, but none so rapid by God’s grace as the twentieth century and onwards.
How many of us have grown through the many inventions and innovations of the last hundred plus years?
Horse and cart travel was overtaken by the automobile which came into its affordable status early in the 1900’s. We have watched the growth of the motor industry and the advancement into air travel.
We thought steam was the greatest invention for travel from its beginning in the nineteenth century, but then, along came the aeroplane. After that the rocket in its varying usages. There is evidence of rockets having been invented and used by the Chinese as far back as 3,000 years ago but never as now for the exploration of space as well as war missiles.
Shipping has been enhanced by Submarines so who of the ancients could have envisaged such?
We have seen the telephone system established and then Radio was further developed onward to television. The younger generation is more visually inclined to pictures and caricaturist games with communication deteriorating and new mindsets confusing and alarming the older generation.
Typewriters have been superseded by computers, the technologies of which continue to astound. No longer is writing in longhand an art to be encouraged and here my imagination takes giant leaps.
Perhaps the largest leap has been in communication.
When Jesus returns as Lord and King His return will be seen everywhere at once with radio and television broadcasting the news with varied attitudes.
“LOL! R U looking at gr8t news? I wunder wot will b next? R U a believer?”
I love the Lord’s humour. There is a time for everything under the sun, and He withheld much wisdom in technology for these days.
