Isaiah 43:18,19.
Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.
Doing a new thing – what does that mean to us? Are we eligible to receive all the promises of God when we embark on the New Life, after being born again?
As our lives are made up of a series of new beginnings, it is interesting to look back to see where each ended. You see, what’s the point of new beginnings if they aren’t taking us somewhere? It may be our first step into something essential for our growth, like starting school and being an infant in a completely new environment. But then there is another fresh start as senior school is begun; by then we have learned a little and cope better. There may follow university or college and though nervous we have by now built up more confidence in ourselves. First day at work, meeting your future spouse, greeting your first child? Now life is really going for gold in the race to make progress.
Somewhere in that busyness of change and growth a decision needs to be made. We have two choices – the right or the wrong. The choice we make is crucial to our eternal prospects: the right choice brings blessing, the wrong puts us under a curse!
The right choice makes us eligible to receive promises like that in Jeremiah 29:11 - I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper, not to harm; plans to give you hope and a future.
The wrong condemns us to separation from God into eternity, though He makes sure we have ample opportunities to be confronted by Truth.
As we move through our different stages how do we relate to the people who become part of that passage? Do we recognise those who are a good influence against those who are not?
Who impresses us the most? Perhaps we copy some out of admiration, trying to emulate their success. Are there times when we discern a certain disquieting thought? A thought that questions or challenges our vulnerability? We do well to remember that our Father knows our thoughts – and is ready to guide us through the decisions we make. We only need to ask. So before we make any fresh start we should know what His will is for us, take heed, and submit to His guidance.
Even when we don’t know where to turn, He will make a way for us – through the wilderness and irrigated by streams of Living Water.
