I suppose American politics have always had an element of dishonesty and underhandedness, but I fear this year’s Presidential election has brought us to a new low. It is bad enough that I’m old enough to remember firsthand many unfavorable moments from both candidates, but the fact they are both wasting words trying to tell us why they are a better choice than their opponent, is absolutely incredible. I will have to decide for myself which of the two will be the lesser of two evils. At one moment, they present themselves as moral, God-fearing people who promise to fulfill the ideals of whoever is listening at the moment, and in the next breath, they speak with sharpness and profanity, all in the name of sound leadership. Many will make the decision not to vote at all, because of our bleak prospects for President. The thought crossed my mind, but then I am reminded of the men and women who fought, and many died for the very privilege I have to allow my voice to be heard by way of the vote. No, I will not ignore their sacrifice on my behalf. If we all just quit and let the decisions be left unchecked to these so-called leaders, we certainly deserve to live with the mess we chose to ignore in the first place.
When I was a child, I trusted my leaders. I respected my school teachers no matter who they were, because I was taught to do so. I respected all forms of authority, and was taught that no matter where I was, if I found myself lost or frightened, I could find a policeman to help me. I had a blind trust with most people, because they had never given me a reason to think otherwise. I can’t help but feel this should also be the case with our politicians and community leaders, but sadly, it isn’t. I am disheartened by the fact that I don’t always trust the people around me. No longer is a handshake good enough to seal an agreement between friends, and just because someone goes to church doesn’t ensure they are a safe haven in regard to the care of your children or grandchildren.
Amidst the chaos and even downright wickedness of our nation, I have a hope that no one can take from me. No matter who ends up in the White House this time, my ultimate leader, guide, and yes, Savior, is my Lord, Jesus Christ. When I’m allowing the news of the day to get me all tangled up in knots, I am reminded that nothing has, or will happen without His already knowing the outcome. This is His world, this is His America, and we are His people, whether we choose to acknowledge Him or not. He has this under control. As Christians, we must be diligent about sharing His gospel, because we all know the time for His return must be close at hand. I will most definitely keep my trust in Jesus, who will never ever fail me. Until that time, I will choose to believe in the basic decency of my fellow man... And I will continue to tell my grandchildren to seek out a policeman if they are ever in need of help.
