I was tickled when my husband Bill prayed this morning, “Father help us not to balk at what you have for us today.” I’m sure my giggle wasn’t considered spiritual but we both laughed when he finished. I just hadn’t heard the word balk for some time.
When I think of someone who balks, I think of the Israelites going through the wilderness...it seemed they were never happy. But why did I think of someone else and not myself? Hmm!
It’s almost like when the pastor is preaching we think he is referring to someone behind us, not us; surely not. We balk worse than the Israelites probably, never happy about how things are done. Our attitudes start showing through. We begin to balk, murmur, chide, gripe or complain about everything.
A place was named after the Israelites in Exodus 17:7 And he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the Lord, saying, Is the Lord among us or not? We offend God first of all by not trusting Him. He is the God of the universe; who are we next to Him?
Christian brother or sister, without a doubt we will see each other in the barnyard. Better to trust the Lord, leaning not to our own understanding. Then maybe our lessons would be learned much quicker; not spending 40 years roaming the deserts of this life or stuck in the barnyard balking away.
