The sand pierced my feet like burning tongues of fire, so I slipped on last year’s vacation souvenir “Jesus saves” flip-flops. An old saying came to mind: “It is impossible to walk on the beach without making an imprint in the sand and taking some of it with us.” I prayed that God would use me to make a positive impact in someone else’s life, and leave a bit of myself behind in the process.
As I walked, I listened to the relaxing rhythm of the white caps as they rolled in and out—calling breathe in, breathe out. Just as my footprints were etched in the sand, I noticed that the waters covered my tracks. It reminded me of how Christ’s love comes rushing in to cover all of our sins.
The wind started to pick up and the hair of my head started to stand straight up. Out of nowhere, arcs of white-blue flashes lit up the sky like firefly showers and a sonic boom sounded. Then one of the bolts descended downward into a branch-like pattern and struck the umbrella stand right beside me. It ricocheted off the pole and struck me in the head. I felt the electricity intensify as it tingled down my arm, then down my leg and into my foot. I believe it then just shot out of my leg and into the sand. Next, I was tossed several feet in the air and thrown to the ground.
"Jesus, help me,” I said, as a cry escaped my lips.
The commotion around me intensified as two life-guards rushed to my side. Gently, they rolled me onto a board and strapped me down.
“Todd, Check her vitals.”
“Her heart rate and pulse are normal,” he replied.
“Ma’am, are you experiencing any pain?”
“My head hurts a little and I feel a little woozy,” I replied.
“Patient is conscious and alert.”
“Let’s move her into the ambulance.”
I recalled little of my trip to the hospital, except the piercing wail of the sirens, waweep, waweep, as they sped through the busy streets.
“It’s a miracle!” the doctor at the hospital exclaimed, “Over 300,000 volts of lightning hit her and the rubberized soles of her sandals spared her life.”
Who could have ever believed that my “Jesus saves” memento flip-flops would protect me from the storm of a lifetime?

This story is based on the true life story of Jennifer Lyons,a 49-year-old nurse from Chippenham, Wilshire, who was miraculously unharmed when a bolt of lightning rebounded off her satellite dish and hit her. She was protected by the rubberized soles of her flip-flops.
