“You have been dating this man for two years, Lynn! He asked you to marry him in front of his family and friends and you told him you’d think about it?”
When she puts it that way, it makes me sound so horrible.
“Lynn, did you see the look on his face? He was traumatized! For a minute there I thought he was going to throw up on your feet. His uncle Albert had to help him back up after he got down on his knee like that for you.”
Her guilt trip is wearing me out. As my big sister, she has always done this to me. I wonder why I even listen to her sometimes.
“I guess it is best you broke his heart now instead of a year down the road when you are married. If his momma’s eyes could have shot lightning bolts, you’d still be smoking. What were you thinking?”
At least she finally acknowledges that I was thinking at the time. I don’t like making hasty decisions, especially when it involves something as major as getting married. Her jaws must be tired by now.
“Then, oh, then did you see Ron’s pastor? For a minute I thought he was going to throw the Bible at you. He should have, you know. He should have thrown it so hard that it knocked you backwards onto the floor. If he had, then Ron’s mom could have dumped her drink on you. You would have totally deserved it. I just don’t know what’s wrong with you.”
I am wrong. Her jaws are indestructible.
“Okay, let me get this straight. You love Ron because he is sweet, responsible, and loves children. Right?”
I nod. He is really sweet and responsible. My nieces and nephews adore him and he adores them too.
“You aren’t sure if you want to marry him though because you caught him clipping his toenails in your dining room? It could be worse. I mean he could bite them off like our brother does. Oh, and don’t let me forget about how his love of the taco bar at El Doro’s annoys you to the core. The man loves tacos! You also don’t know if he’s the ‘one’ because he wears white socks with black shoes? Again, it could be worse. Remember Mory and how he wore socks with sandals?”
Pat is making me sound really shallow now. There is so much more to it than Ron’s sock color or his obsession with tacos. Please let her stop talking.
“Did you see the ring he bought you? Did you even look at it? It was gorgeous! He was down on his knee and had that huge cheesy grin on his face when he opened the box. Then, you crushed him. You opened your eyes and saw him and gave him the ‘look’.”
I look at her and she snaps her fingers multiple times in the air like some sort of gypsy dancing at a carnival.
“That’s the ‘look’! That’s how you looked at poor Ron when he asked you to be his wife. It’s that look of disgust as though you just threw up in your mouth a little.”
The mirror doesn’t lie. From across the room, I see my reflection and she is right. It does look like I just belched up Ron’s favorite taco. I hold up my hand to her indicating that I would like to speak now.
“Pat, I appreciate your concern and it’s obvious that you like Ron and that you think I should marry him. It was very unfair of him to propose like that seeing as how we haven’t even discussed getting married. Most of our time is spent deciding about where to eat dinner or what movie to watch. We debate on if his tie should match my dress when we go to church or if vitamins are really good for your health.”
Pat just sits there, munched up and mad. I guess she realizes she hadn’t even considered my side until now. As I get up to leave, I turn to her and say, “Just so you know, I’ve weighed my options and I’m saying yes.”
