The Uncommitted Committed

Is there such a thing as commitment anymore? It seems you hear quite often about people’s commitment, whether it’s in a marriage, a business, a relationship, or in a family. People want to be committed to something.
It appears that if truth be told people in general are only committed to one thing, THEMSELVES.
While at Disney over Christmas I had plenty of time to “people watch”. Its something I never get tired of doing. I have found that people love to wear clothing that makes a statement. A young girl of around nine or ten walked by and the statement on her shirt still has me thinking today. It said: I LOVE ME. As I continued to watch people go to and fro by the thousands, I realized that for the majority of people, her statement was right. People love themselves and are committed to serving themselves. Their commitment is so strong that they will do what ever it takes to fulfill that commitment. If that means taking advantage of someone, they’ll do it. If it means being unkind to another person, they’ll do it. If it means “stepping” on somebody they won’t even think twice.
What a sad testimony of mankind. But even more interesting and sad is the level of commitment that Christians have to Christ and each other verses the level they say they have.
So many people today who call themselves Christians merely wear the name when it suits them. Send them to work and it’s hard to tell in most cases who is the Christian and who is not. Send the kids to school and watch to see if a “Christian” will stand out. Or just go to a “Christian” church. Some are committed. They attend most every Sunday, or at least on Christmas and Easter. They take the Sacraments faithfully thinking that by doing so they are committed and have insured their destination ticket to Heaven. Are they committed? ABSOLUTELY! Is their commitment to the Christ who died for them, rose again and now sits at the right hand of the Father, or to themselves? One could easily assume by their appearance that it is all about them. What will they get out of it. After all, you don’t do something for nothing. To others, the assembling of themselves together for worship is nothing more than a joke.
I guess if we want to understand commitment in its truest form, the only place we can look is God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.
God created us and is committed to us even though through sin we have lost our way deserving of death. Jesus came to earth as a man, suffered and died on a cross, then rose from the dead assuring us of the hope of eternal life if only we accept Him. The Holy Spirit is committed to be with us and teach us so that we may grow to be a better Christian and better live the life God has for us. Now that’s COMMITMENT!
The challenge to me as well as to others is to examine ourselves, our motives and our ideals. Does the commitment we portray to others point to a life lived for Christ? Does the end game we forge ahead towards point to Jesus and a home with Him in Heaven for eternity? Do our attitudes and actions say, “it’s not all about me, it’s about You, Jesus”?
I AM COMMITTED!
Lord, help me to purpose in my heart every day that my commitment is to You and for Your Glory and not just centered on me.

You are so right in understanding that God alone is fully commited, as man's heart is consumed with self. We will never be completely God-centered or other-centered until we take our first breath in heaven. You might want to hit the preview button before sending and add paragraph divisions next time. Good job.

Great contrast in your title.
I appreciate your points, but they could flow more strongly from a different example than the 9 yo girl and her shirt. I almost felt that you were picking on her - though I know you weren't.
Extra spacing between your paras would have also allowed your points more impact, but overall, a very serious challenge.

I agree with Noel on the spacing between paragraphs, but aside from that, this was great food for thought! I liked the prayer at the end! God bless!

Amen to the last sentence written in this piece. My prayer is that we would all be committed to God our Savior in revealing from our attitudes and actions the truth about "it's not all about me, it's about Jesus!" Nicely written with excellent content on topic of true commitment. God bless.
