Synopsis: Modern day prodigal son story
Cast: one slightly older male - Pierce, one younger female - Sunshine
Props: One slightly tattered/ worn suitcase, two chairs placed side by side
Setting: General stage
Scripture: Luke 15: 11- 20
[Pierce sitting on outside chair reading newspaper- window seat on a bus]
[Sunshine enters up stage carrying suitcase as if struggling with the weight. She stops next to the empty seat and attempts to put suitcase in overhead compartment {mime} but almost drops it in the process.]
[Pierce jumps to his feet] Pierce: Here let me help you with that.
Sunshine:[gruffly pulls the suitcase away] No thanks! I’ll keep it with me.
Pierce: Sorry, didn’t mean to offend, just being neighborly.
Sunshine: [Sarcastic] Hmmph…I’ve had my fill of good neighbors. I’ll take care of myself. Thank you.
[Both sit]
Pierce: Suit yourself. It’s just that the suitcase seemed to be weighing you down and you looked like you could use a little help.
Sunshine: Look, you seem like a nice man but most of what is weighing me down has been caused by people who said they were my friends.
Pierce: This world can be a dark place. I’ll give you that. I can’t imagine that it gets easier though by not trusting anyone.
Sunshine: Maybe, you shouldn’t trust me.
Pierce: Hmmmm….I’m a pretty good judge of character.
Sunshine: Not as good as you think.
[Both silent for awhile]
Pierce: Where ya headed?
Sunshine: [sad, unsure] Just going back home. Not really sure if my dad wants me back but…..I just want to go home.
Pierce: I have a daughter about your age. No matter what, I would want her to come home.
Sunshine: You don’t know what I’ve done. My dad would have every right to tell me to keep right on going and never come back. I’m just hoping that he’ll let me stay long enough to get back on my feet. That’s all.
[Both quiet again]
Pierce: My name’s Pierce. What’s yours?
Sunshine: Sunshine
Pierce: Sunshine! That’s a great name! Is that your given name?
Sunshine: Nah…I changed my name to Sunshine. I wanted something unusual, unique. [Shrugs]
Sunshine: So what do you do besides feel sorry for down and out strangers?
Pierce: I’m a Private Detective.
Sunshine: No kidding? Like an honest to goodness Private Eye? That’s pretty exciting.
Pierce: Not really. Mostly, I look for missing persons or investigate fraud, things like that.
Sunshine: What kind of case are you working on now?
Pierce: It’s a missing person case, a father looking for his daughter.
Sunshine: Oh yeah. Was she kidnapped or something?
Pierce: No, she left of her own free will but he wants me to find her and give her a message.
Sunshine: He’s paying you to find her, just to give her a message?
Pierce: Yep.
Sunshine: What’s the message?
Pierce: I love you. You’re forgiven. Please, come home.
