Geneva is my older sister, but she is special. The school she attends gives her beads to bring home. Everyday she lugs a huge box filled to the top with beads in all colors and sizes. Purple sparkly beads, green shiny ones, and the yellow ones. The yellow ones are the ugliest, but my sister doesn't care what the beads look like. They are her favorite.
I don't question her logic. My aunt says just leave her be. So I do. I go outside to play until the street like comes on, then I know it's time for supper.
Geneva is still sitting at her work table, separating the yellow ugly beads from the pretty purple and green one. I sit down next to her.
“Neva, can I have the purple and green beads?”
Geneva doesn't miss a beat counting the yellow beads and just pushes the other beads to the side for me to pick up.
“Neva, why do you only want the yellow beads?”
She looks into my eyes with her crooked smile, “Meme, yellow is for trust. For every yellow bead I have I know God is there answering my prayers.”
I started to cry. I hadn't look at the ugly yellow beads through my sister's eyes. I only saw the purple and green pretty beads. My sister needed something in her life to represent faith and she chose the yellow beads.
I really didn't know my sister. I really didn't know myself until that day. Geneva opened my eyes to something more than exterior beauty. She showed me faith comes in many different forms and that day it came in the form of ugly yellow beads.
