Miles away in the small town where she'd grown up, she would never have considered such a thing. Here, her overly strict, religious parents weren't around to tell her she couldn't. There was just lots of liquor, loud music, and plenty of good looking guys.
After several drinks Chloe let go of the inhibitions she'd held for so long. She locked eyes with the most amazing guy she'd ever seen. From across the room he mouthed the word “hi.” She smiled. He immediately walked over. His gorgeous green eyes took her breath away, as did his smile. Her heart raced with anticipation.
“I'm Neville, and who might you be?”
“I'm Chloe.” She spoke boldly.
“It's kinda loud in here. Want to go outside so we can talk?”
They found their way to the back yard. As they sat talking on a bench in the moonlight, they discovered they had a lot in common. This was Neville's third year of school, and he too was enjoying his freedom.
“I was so glad to finally get some breathing room. I mean, my parents are all right, but they just wouldn't let me do anything I wanted!”
Neville pulled out a bag full of green weed.
“Do you get high Chloe?”
“Oh yeah,” she lied, “all the time.”
Neville smiled and handed her the pipe he had packed with pot. Not knowing what to do, she said, “You first.”
He took the pipe, lit it, and inhaled deeply, holding his breath for a long time before exhaling, then handed the pipe back to Chloe.
The very idea of doing something her parents would find so objectionable thrilled her. She was scared, but intrigued, so she followed his example. It made her cough. Neville laughed.
“Good stuff, huh?”
“Oh yeah...great!” Chloe had no idea what made pot “good,” she just knew she liked how she felt after a few more hits from the pipe.
When Neville leaned in to kiss her she was more into it than she could have ever imagined. She was as intoxicated by the combination of Neville's green eyes and attention as she was the alcohol and marijuana.
They slipped away to his apartment and spent the night together. Chloe would have never done anything like this before, but under the hypnotic spell of that night, she seemed powerless to say no.
She woke in the morning to hear Neville saying, “Look, I've got a bunch of stuff to do today, so I need to get going....okay?” He grabbed his coat and left, saying “I'll call you,” as the door slammed.
A little disoriented, Chloe pieced together the events of the night before as she got dressed. She was a little unsure, but really excited. She'd found this great guy, perhaps even THE guy, and was pleased to be the object of his desire.
Days went by, and then weeks, and Chloe never heard from Neville. She didn't even know his last name. She assumed she would learn all those details on the many romantic evenings they would share. After all, it had been such a magical night, surely there were more to come.
She was wrong.
Chloe hugged Kelly tightly. “I know you want to have fun, honey. I just want you to know the dangers that are out there.
Her 15-year-old daughter rolled her eyes.
“It's okay to cut loose a little, but be careful. Guys will tell you anything. You need to trust your instincts and remember your values.”
Kelly nodded . As Chloe looked into her daughter's green eyes, she saw herself. It scared her. She had been a good girl who was naive and inexperienced. No one had prepared her. She wanted Kelly to avoid the pitfalls she had fallen into.
As she left, Chloe prayed, “Dear God, Kelly is the good You've brought from my bad choices. Give her wisdom and discernment, Lord. Help her to hear Your voice and listen to it. Thank you for helping me raise such a great kid. You've been right here with me as we've grown up together.”
A wonderful peace washed over Chloe. She knew her daughter would be fine.
