“We will be back, please God in just a few short years”---
The great jet engines roar---we lift into the blue---
“Farewell misty Ireland, ‘till we return to you.”
Like many went before, we venture far from home,
Bound for new horizons across the ocean’s foam---
Now---just the two of us and baby, four months old---
We’ve cut so many ties---what does the future hold?
We arrive in Sydney ‘round midday Christmas Eve---
Blasts of hot air hit us---why did we ever leave? ---
Move to a tiny flat---mosquitoes, bugs and flies---
We’ve no return tickets---my wife sits down and cries.
We collapse exhausted and sleep the hours away---
Christmas Eve passes by---Oh no! It’s Christmas Day!
What a lonesome Christmas!!---no gifts, no lights, no tree!
But we had each other---my wife, my child and me!
