He places his coffee on the table at his side, and slowly moves onto his knees. He turns around and places his elbows in the seat and bows his head. I cannot hear him anymore; his words are from his heart. I can see the passion in each petition as I watch him rock back and forth. He lifts his head and reaches his arms to the ceiling, praising the God that has made him. I know that he prays for each and everyone of us, too. I know because other mornings, I have heard him. He prays in a voice that knows the One to which he speaks, and he speaks in such a way I know God must answer back. His prayers are never rushed, patiently he converses, and heaven seems to settle in our living room.
After he has poured out every request to God, he rises. As he reaches to pick up his cup of coffee, he spies me watching him. He smiles and beckons me forth. I slowly move from my place on the floor and go to meet him with a kiss. After asking how I slept, he invites me to share his coffee as he picks up his paper and looks at the crossword puzzle. I take a sip from his big brown mug and smile. I sit across from him, knees pulled up to my chest, watching him once more.
“Daddy?”
“Hmmm?” He asks as he bites on the end of his pencil.
“I love you.”
He puts down his paper, and reaches for me, placing me on his lap. He kisses my nose and whispers, “I love you, too, Sassy.”
And right here, in this moment, I am content to stay forever
