“…Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” Mark 10:14 NIV
When I was just a college girl,
The preacher came to ask
If I would teach in Sunday School
A kindergarten class.
Though I’d had no experience,
I said that I would try.
“How hard could this be?” was my thought.
I found out with a sigh.
Like thunder to the room they came,
Completely without poise,
But all the calmness that they lacked,
They made up for with noise.
I tried to teach them of God’s love
Through stories that I told,
Like Daniel in the lion’s den
And David, brave and bold.
We sang together lively songs
With motions they could make.
They’d fold their hands to say a prayer
And close “For Jesus’ sake.”
One morning Janey gave to me
A lecture about germs,
“You shouldn’t eat stuff off the floor
‘Cause Jimmy got some worms.”
I could not help but love those tykes,
So precious in God’s sight.
They’d climb to get upon my lap
So they could hug me tight.
When I was on the campus, I
Would see them everywhere.
They’d shout with voices extra loud,
“Look, that’s our teacher there.”
Those little ones, grown up today,
Have scattered far and wide.
I pray God’s love they’ll not forget
And in His peace abide.
