Children and dogs—what a combination! How do they respond to each other? They react toward the other in a variety of ways. Following is a true account of an incident which I observed while in school in Louisville, Kentucky.
I am a guide dog user who went to school in Louisville. In 2001, I met and partnered with a guide dog a male yellow Labrador retriever named Elko. He was and still to this day very curious about the world. One day when we went to an indoor track, we met representatives from a child development center associated with the institution we attended. Well, you can probably guess what happened. The children ranged in age from pre-school to early elementary school age with adults accompanying them. They saw Elko, and what excitement! They distracted him, he distracted them, and he targeted one child in particular for a good old-fashion face washing. I tried getting Elko away from the unfortunate recipient of this unscheduled bath, and finally I succeeded. I learned later, however, who this child’s mother was: She worked at the school’s dining hall. So when my guide dog and I went there so I could eat my dinner, Philip announced to the whole wide world “ELKO LICKED ME IN THE FACE!” Talk about embarrassment! I wonder if he got behind the ears.
So if your boy or girl needs a good face washing and you are too tired to do it, there is a guide dog ready, willing, and able to perform the chore!
