Jason was tired. He was tired of hospitals. Tired of needles. Tired of hoping. Tired of tests. He knew, he knew so well, that his parents were tired, too.
Pam and John, his parents, had been wonderful throughout this whole ordeal, always lifting Jason up when things got tough, always looking for the best way to look at the results, even when those results did not show what they had hoped for, what they and so many others had prayed for. But, now, it was up to Jason to help his parents. For he had reached a new place, and he needed for them to join him there.
Pam knew that something had changed within her young son. They had been “joined at the hip” for the past three years, almost never apart except for those places that he had to enter alone. But not really alone, she had found. He had explained to her that he never felt that he was by himself in the tube that surrounded him. He always knew God’s love was with him. “How could he be so wise at such a young age?” she wondered tearily.
John, too, had noticed the differences, and it worried him. Although he saw the depths of peace growing in Jason’s eyes, saw the kind way he responded to every doctor and nurse who attended to him, how he radiated God’s love to all around him, Daddy was not ready to face what he feared the changes meant. He began to consider the possibility that God had different plans for Jason and his family than the ones they had wanted. Though he was bone weary, he was not certain he was ready to have the fight come to an end. Hope for a miracle continued to drive him as he entered their daily report on Facebook.
God’s love looked down on Jason as he rested in the bed he had slept in since he was three. Softly, He approached, hugging Jason to Himself, giving him the strength he needed as he prepared for the miracle that was coming. Groggily whispering a quiet prayer, Jason drifted into slumber.
During the early hours of a spring morning, Pam and John found themselves squeezed into a bed not meant to hold a whole family. But that was exactly what it was doing. Jason’s breathing was becoming labored, but God’s love permeated the room, bathing the three of them in a peace they would not later be able to explain.
As painful as it was to accept, Pam and John had acquiesced to Jason’s wishes. “Can we please just spend this time together? Can we set aside our pushing and pulling and just love our time together?” he had pleaded.
So, they spent Jason’s last days in joy as God’s love looked on them from above. They played quiet games of cards when he felt well enough, they had extended family come for a short visit that filled them all with reminders of past visits and good memories. Then, it was just the three, along with the hospice nurse who stayed close by. And they sang favorite songs from Jason’s childhood, that fleeting time that was ending so soon. “Jesus loves me, this I know,” they whispered together, and they knew that it was true.
Even though the miracle they had asked for had not come, a different miracle supported them now. God’s love surrounded them, prayers of loved ones covered them, and Jason quietly, but gratefully slipped from his worn out body into the love that God had provided for them all over two thousand years ago. Jesus held out his hand, and Jason gladly took it, once again becoming whole.
When asked how they had stood it in those last moments, Pam quietly answered, “ We didn’t get a choice. But we didn’t have to do it alone.” God’s love had been beside them every step of the way. Now, more than ever, they held on to His love.
“As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you. Now remain in My love.” John 15:9 NIV
