“I can sleep when I’m dead,” declares those living in the fast lane—-a way of life that is constantly busy, hurried, and full of high-pressure activity.
Are you always on the go? Days seem to fly by in a whirlwind of activity, driven by a relentless to-do list that leaves little time for eating well, exercising, relationships, and even sleep. How many times have you either heard or uttered, “Hurry up!” “Stop dragging your feet!” “We don’t have all the time in the world” ? Time is not marching on. It’s racing on.
A unit of time represents fractions of our total lifespan. As we age, this tends to make each year feel less significant and creates a sensation that time is accelerating. Usually, however, it is we, ourselves, that tend to quicken our pace, trying to make the most of the time that we are given on this earth. We race against the ticking clock of time by attempting to live at the speed of light. We are trying to make the most of this fleeting passage. We are saying “yes” more than ever, while overestimating what we can realistically accomplish in a day. It is difficult in this crazy world to balance the many productive activities of life and manage our time effectively. After all, it is “just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.” (James 4:14. NIV)
The message we receive from the world is that slow is bad, and fast is good. Like my favorite pineapple upside down cake, the value system is turned upside down. We become busy but not effective. This throws us out of alignment with what matters most to God. Hurry is the enemy of spiritual life. Have you noticed that your worst moments come from being in a hurry? You’re late for an appointment, behind on a to-do list, trying to do too much in one day…all of this comes with a heavy price of increased stress, anxiety, worry, frustration, and anger.
Peace is incompatible with hurry. Cramming more and more into our overfull lives gives us no time to slow down and experience God’s peace. It becomes too much—too extra. It becomes a life lacking in real joy with no living in the moment.
“The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.” (Proverbs 21:5 NIV)
Instead, why not set clear boundaries with our schedule and include more time for prayer and Bible study? Boundaries protect our peace and keep us on track with our God ordained purpose when we prioritize our activities with the proper perspective. By doing this we can stop this helter-skelter rush and prevent passing over the good things in our life.
We cannot win the race against the ticking clock of time. We all have a limited time on earth to fulfill our purpose. But we can spend what time we have left to love God, love others, and make disciples of Jesus Christ. That is, ultimately, the most important responsibility on our to-do list. Every moment has its end, but with Jesus eternity is our future.
