My parents died when they were young. My mother got mentally ill when I was a baby, and she couldn't take care of me as a mother should. So, I was taken away from her and went to live with my grandparents.
Looking back, I understand why I always wanted to be with my grandmother. I felt safe when I was with her.
I remember when I gave my life to Christ. My grandmother was a Christian and an ardent churchgoer. I would attend church with her because I wanted to be with her. I loved to hear the congregation singing and worshipping God. One of the songs that caught my attention as a child was 'Jesus I Promised to Serve Thee to the End:'
O Jesus, I have promised
to serve Thee to the end;
be Thou forever near me,
my Master and my Friend;
I shall not fear the battle
if Thou art by my side,
nor wander from the pathway
if Thou wilt be my Guide.
I would listen to them sing the song and one day, I sang it from my heart. From that time, mercy followed me, and the Lord became my banner.
His banner over me is Love, a symbol of His constant presence and care. As I grew older, I understood and felt the depth of His Love and care for me through the years. He has always been there, watching over me and protecting me from many dangers, seen and unseen.
There were moments when I found myself in situations where only God's protection could have saved me. And He did. In those moments, I felt His hand guiding me, bringing me out of those circumstances and placing my feet firmly on His rock, ensuring my safety and security.
Psalm 91 speaks about God's protection: "My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."
Just because we are under His protection doesn't stop the storms of life from happening to us. But we are held secure amid the storms where we are safe in His "sheltering arms."
I remember this story. A brother used to live in his shop in an industrial area. That area was dark at night because no houses were there, and people could hardly see clearly. A friend asked him if he wasn't afraid of being alone in his shop at night. His reply was, 'Psalm 91, buddy! That keeps me safe.'
You may see thunder, lightning, and darkness surround you, but remember that a covering of protection is around you.
"For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways." Psalm 91:11 NKJV.
