There was a lot of hunting then, so they went deer hunting together and walked in the wilderness for about half a day and didn't see any tracks. While walking, Bert said, "I want to show you something I bought with me." And he showed Dale the whistle. As Dale watched him, he was almost scared of him. Bert's eyes were like lizard eyes, devilish and hard-hearted. Dale knew he could blow that whistle like a fawn or baby deer crying.
Dale said, "Bert, you're not going to use that?"
Bert grinned, "Aw get next to yourself preacher."
"You shouldn’t do that Bert."
"Preacher you're too tender hearted. That's the way with you guys. You're too tender hearted."
They had a good opening because the snow had melted. Bert stooped down, reached for his pocket, and took out the whistle.
"You're not going to do that Bert," Dale exclaimed, turning away. Bert blew that whistle and sounded like a little deer crying.
Then Dale saw a beautiful big doe, a mother deer, appeared on the other side.
Oh, she looked so graceful, her big brown eyes looking, her ears sticking out as she walked out to the clearing. Why? She was a mother. She thought her baby was in trouble. She stood there. She saw the hunter, but she was not afraid. She began to walk, hunting for her baby. She was walking in the face of her death because she was a mother. She must get to it because it was in trouble. Any other time, she would be scared to death.
Dale looked around, knowing that Bert was a dead shot. A sharpshooter, never miss. He would blow her heart out in a moment. Dale loved Bert because he knew that deep down in his heart, he was looking for something real.
Dale prayed, "God, how could that cruel-hearted man do that…?" While he was praying, he noticed the silence. He heard nothing and thought, "Why don't the gun fire?” When he looked, Bert was trembling as he dropped the rifle on the ground, grabbed Dale’s pants leg, and cried, “Dale, I've had enough of it. I can't stand it anymore. Tell me about that Jesus that put that kind of love into a man's heart.”
On that snowy ground, Dale led that cruel-hearted man to Christ.
Bert saw something real, genuine love displayed by that mother deer.
