Rex Brand, better known as Diamond, knew that in addition to his diamond exterior, he needed to keep his insides healthy also. His civilian job, working as a trainer at the local gym helped, but he still had a personal fitness routine at home, to the supplement the workout he got as a superhero and fighting crime regularly. He also wanted to provide a positive example to his and Rebecca’s children about staying healthy.

While he used the equipment at the gym to workout, he had to be cautious not to overdo it and tip off his secret identity. This made it difficult when a costumed villain strolled in to the gym with the intent of robbing the place.

The gym mostly took card payments for memberships, they kept a change supply of cash on hand for food and apparel sales. When a little known villain named the Rock entered the gym, with fists like rocks, as Diamond knew from personal experience, Rex started to look for a place to hide and change to Diamond.

Rock’s opening gambit wasn’t very original. He walked in the front door, grabbed the nearest woman customer and demanded, “All your cash! Now!”

Lisa, the manager on duty, decided to try to de-escalate the situation by tremulously agreeing to his demands. Unsatisfied with her response time the Rock sneered, “Seems like you need to use some of your own equipment to get in better shape.”

Rex decided not to ignore the treatment of his college friend and spoke up. “Hey, man, maybe she’s worried about what you’re gonna do to a customer. She’s just watching you like I am.” He accompanied his last sentence with a flex of his fists.

The Rock glanced dismissively at the civilian garbed hero and returned his attention to the diminutive manager. Diamond saw his chance to slip away and change, as the Rock kept his gaze firmly fixed on his boss.

An instant later, the brown and black clad Diamond was standing where Rex had been a moment before, whereupon he bellowed out a challenge to the Rock. “You’re a real tough guy hassling ordinary people. How about you and me go a round or two? I haven’t had a good workout in days!”

Rock wasn’t big on originality, so he tried to distract the hero by throwing his hostage at Diamond with the command, “Catch.” Then he tried to get out of the gym. Diamond caught the woman easily and retorted, “I thought we were going to have a workout session. Let’s leave the civilians out of it.” As he said this, he noticed Lisa lock herself in her office, not that it would do any good he thought. With Rock’s strength, the door may as well be made of paper.

“Alright, tough guy,” Rock growled, “let’s rumble!”

Fists of Diamond slammed into the Rock’s super hard body, while Rock did likewise towards Diamond. Diamond tried a judo move he had learned on Rock, and was surprised at how heavy the villain was. Rex thought, ‘It’s a good thing I have superstrength or this guy might actually give me a serious workout.’ Because of his physique, he didn’t sweat from the exertion, and neither did the Rock, but Rex suspected that most of his fellow Light Force heroes would be sweaty dealing with this much of a workout.

After trading blows, and defending himself when Rock tried to use workout equipment as weapons, Rex decided enough was enough and, grabbing the heaviest weights he could hoist, he hauled off and slammed them against Rock’s head. Fortunately for him, Rock was nearly as durable as Diamond, so being hit with the weights stunned him sufficiently to be subdued, without serious injury. Unfortunately, the weights were dented by Rock’s hard skull.

Despite this, Diamond was able to place Rock in to custody, where the police had a special reinforced cell waiting for such villains. After handing Rock off to the police, Diamond approached Lisa. "Sorry about the damage."

Lisa smiled and replied, “No problem. That’s what insurance is for. Besides,” she grinned, "I’ve got a souvenir of your workout in my gym.” She gestured toward the damaged weights.

Diamond decided to humor her. Picking the barbells up with one hand he asked, “Where would you like these?”
