The caller spoke in a high male voice as he cackled, “I am the person your paper has been calling the Mad Blaster. I am calling to inform you that I’ve placed a very special toy at the Eagle Pass Conference Center, and it’s set to go off in ten minutes or so. I plan on being there to watch the boom. It’s so exciting!” With a howl of laughter he hung up.
Larissa then made two phone calls, one to 911, the other to her sister, the crimefighter known as Mariness.
Mariness called two of her colleagues, Amazing Girl and Diamond, and told them of the threat. Diamond made a call to another crimefighter he thought would be helpful, and just at 10:00 three colorfully costumed figures arrived at the Eagle Pass Conference Center just as a blast of orange flame took out the north side.
As the building began to list in the direction of the blast, Diamond and Amazing Girl sprang into action. The latter grew to her maximum size and literally held the building up while Diamond held the entrance open with his bare hands. Speedster raced past Diamond and began to help the emergency personnel in getting the people out of the Center. On her fortieth trip, Speedster, Diamond and Amazing Girl heard the sound of another explosion. Amazing Girl began to panic as the building crumbled out of her grip and she shouted, “Is there still anyone left inside?”
The fire captain walked over to her, placed his hand on her massive calf and yelled up, “We’re missing three people, one EMT and two firemen.”
The horrible news was relayed to Diamond and Speedster who immediately got to work sifting through the bombed out building. Speedster saw a leg sticking out from a fallen wall and began moving debris at superspeed. She shouted, "Here!” In a moment the other two crimefighters joined her. As the last piece of rubble was moved away, the costumed trio saw the firemen crumpled over the EMT and another woman, all four covered in blood. Speedster gently carried the fire fighters to waiting ambulances, as Diamond and Amazing Girl carefully moved the EMT and the civilian to another ambulance.
Speedster, used to TV cameras in her civilian guise of Belinda Snow, spotted a news crew out of the corner of her eye. They were interviewing a person who saw the whole thing.
“This is Angela Chen from Eyewitness News speaking to George Hamilton, a witness to this horrific blast. Mr. Hamilton, what did you see?”
Hamilton smirked at the camera, which Speedster at first thought was his excitement at being on TV. As she drifted closer, though, she heard what he said with a growing sense of horror and disgust.
Acting on a hunch, Speedster did an invisible superspeed pat-down between Hamilton’s words and came up with a radio transmitter. An instant later, two policemen were dropped in front of the interview and Speedster was handing the cops the transmitter she had found on Hamilton.
Chen spoke breathlessly into her microphone, “A breaking development, Speedster has just discovered the man responsible for this heinous crime.” As she continued to relay the story to her studio, Diamond and Amazing Girl walked over towards their friend. Spotting them, Angela ran towards the costumed trio. “Diamond, you and your friends were so heroic today as you rescued all those people. What do you have to say about Speedster’s apprehension of the bomber?”
Diamond usually didn’t talk to reporters, but he decided to make an exception for this one. “First, I’m glad the creep was caught. Thank God, no one was killed, but people were hurt because of this monster. Secondly, the real heroes were the firefighters and ambulance crews who ran into the building without superpowers. Me and my friends just helped.”
With his parting comment, he leapt into the sky. Amazing Girl followed him an instant later. A gust of wind was the only clue that Angela Chen had that the Speedster had left as well. Chen closed out her report by saying, “Thank you Diamond for that … honest comment.”
