The ten-year-old students ran around the schoolyard chanting the same phrase over and over. "Wack! Wack!"
It was playtime and there were no rules, or so they thought.
Mrs Connie Jones walked the perimeter of the field and observed the offenders. She said nothing because she was thinking of the best action to take.
The target Leo was obvious because he sat alone in a corner. He was not playing along with the others. His young face was saddened.
"What is the best way to cut this off and finish it?" thought Connie.
When break time was over, she gently took Leo aside and walked him to the school counsellor's office. She too knew what was going on in 5th grade and in his home life.
In the classroom, Connie said firmly, "Ok, girls and boys we need to talk."
"What would you like to say that you do not have the courage to say?" she asked. "I want you all to think carefully and write on a single page what is on your mind. Why would you torture Leo like that?"
In the back of the class sat Keisha. She decided to speak rather than write.
"Mrs Jones", she said, "He is 'wack!"
The class giggled. "It's just slang, Mrs Jones."
After a pause, someone said ' He never talks to us".
"He is boring" whispered another.
So that is the problem.
Together with the counsellor, the teachers knew they needed to not only help Leo but also to talk to his parents and to deal very firmly with his classmates. This was a Christian school, after all. The source of their discipline would include Biblical text.
Using this verse, they asked the students to discuss and explain the following verses in writing.
“It is foolish to belittle a neighbour; a person with good sense remains silent.” “Your own soul is nourished when you are kind, but you destroy yourself when you are cruel.” {Proverbs 11:12, 17}. Some remarkably interesting and honest feedback occurred in the class.
Over the weekend the students must have had time to think because the play periods never saw a repeat of that bullying and name-calling.
Leo remained himself, quiet and withdrawn but his classmates had changed. There was no more name-calling and Connie believed that a lesson was learnt.
