Here is a thought. How about being famous for being late all the time or being the one that never picks up the tab at a restaurant? Maybe famous for being the worst driver ever.
Obviously being “famous” is not always equal. I don’t want to be famous for being the last one to arrive at an important meeting. I don’t want to be famous for driving like a whirling dervish to every place I go. I don’t want to be famous for always sharing a juicy bit of gossip.
In fact, the only one we should want to be famous with is God. I know a lofty thought indeed but there were famous people in the Bible. In the book of Hebrews chapter 11 we find what is often called the “Hall of Fame.” Or shall we say the “Hall of Famous Faith filled People.”
Can we ever aspire to the be in that “Hall of Fame?” Of course, we can. It is simple. We must have faith in God and walk in faith trusting Him wholly and obeying His commands. Now that is not to say that living this kind of life in today’s climate is simple. Because obviously it is not. Countless temptations await us every day and of every kind. The devil like a roaring lion is walking about seeking someone to devour every single day. The worse part about it is he is stealthy and silent and appeals to our Old Man. If you have ever watched a cat stalk a mouse you get the picture. Persistent patience gets results.
So, can we be “famous” in our Christian walk and relationship with God and resist the temptations of our flesh and the devil? Do we get there by gritting our teeth and trying our very hardest? No. It will require a day to day walking with God. Spending time in His Word and in prayer while desiring Him to have first place in our hearts and lives. That is what these “famous” saints did. Abel simply obeyed God with his sacrifice. Enoch enjoyed spending time with God. Noah kept a relationship with God in spite of the wicked and unbelieving society around him. He determined in his heart to put God first in his life. When he was called by God for a major task. He obeyed God and was faithful to build the ark and witness to people for 120 years. Abraham obeyed God and struck out for a new country by faith. He was simply trusting God and took Him at His Word. Sarah simply believed the prophecy of the angels that visited them.
There are more but you get the point. On the surface none of these people were “famous” in their day. They don’t seem to have had any of the glitz and glamour of fame. In fact, some of them were flawed and yet here they are for centuries of Christians to read about. They did nothing except be faithful to God, obey Him, and love Him.
So, can you be “famous”? Yes, you can? Will you have bright lights and much acclaim. No. Like those believers of their day you might be overlooked by society altogether; but you will not be overlooked by God. He is in the business of increasing His Hall of Fame each and every day. What more should we desire? Because fame itself can be fleeting but our walk with God is eternal.
