Since the crescent moon shown through a ceiling of glass panes, he saw no need to turn on the lights when he entered the gymnasium. The glimmer of soft lights danced across the stark cement walls.
Now that his dream of an Olympic medal was in reach, diving consumed his thoughts.
Jim took a deep breath. He glanced at his cell phone again to see if his parents had reached out to him.
He might have known they wouldn't call.
Would his parents bother to come to the Olympic games to watch him?
Why did he need his parents approval? When would he be enough?
The taunts of the other kids seared in his mind, “You’re so lucky that your dad is filthy rich. It must be nice to have money thrown at you.”
They never saw the small boy crying himself to sleep every night.
Drifting from one boarding school to another, Jim decided since his parents had abandoned him, he was going to do everything on his own recognizance, and carve out a different path.
Loneliness hung so heavy, he felt the full weight of it. Closing his eyes, he envisioned the water below pulling him into a vortex of despair.
If there is a God, he has forgotten me too.
Standing backwards on the platform, he stretched out his arms to maintain his balance. Jim caught a glimpse of his shadowy figure. A silhouette cut out in the shape of a cross.
Jesus save me!
Jim crumpled down on the platform. Sorrow wretched his soul. He could not bear the burden of his sin any longer.
And then he heard a voice not his own, “Let go. Take my hand."
A longing stirred within him as he reached for the hand of his Father.
Jim squinted as a bright light blinded him. The pool attendant emerged and cried out, “Don't jump!”
Adrenaline surged through him, heightening his senses as he peered over the edge.
“Didn’t anyone let you know the pool was being drained for repairs.”
Heart hammering, it dawned on him, he was inches away from plummeting into an empty basin.
The wisp-thin veil had tethered between life and death.
Only the cross had saved him.
