ADD TO MY FAVORITES
In the summer of 1966, I had a favorite place to spend my time. It was especially my favorite because I had a sense of accomplishment attached to it. Truly born of blood (just a little), sweat (a lot) and tears (of joy).
Ours was the last house to be built in the development and behind us were endless rows of corn fields, and beside us woods. New construction was going up here and there but for the most part, we only had neighbors to the right of us.
What is now one of my family’s good friends back yard is where once stood the tree house I built. If there had been a Better Fort and Tree House Magazine, I’m sure I would have made the cover. Unique by design (God’s not mine) I utilized three trees that formed a slightly lop-sided triangle. All the supporting branches needed for the floor were relatively at the same height.
I scavenged discarded plywood from the construction sites and went to work! I even found a piece of linoleum “pre-cut” so to speak to a triangle and uneven box shape. I hammered my “steps” into the strongest tree, maneuvered the wood floor from under the branches, then it was time to test the floor.
When I didn’t crash to the ground, I knew the floor was solid and it was on to classing up the place with the linoleum (no chance of splinters in this tree house!). It didn’t fit exactly, there were overhangs in a couple of places, but my walls would take care of that! Out of sight, out of mind.
What seemed to me to be a towering fortress, the photo of me smiling over my kingdom clearly showed otherwise. Regardless, I loved being up there. Surrounded by the sounds and sights only nature can provide. I can still hear the wind whispering in the trees.
My high tower then was fun, my High Tower now is faithful.
Psalm 61 New Living Translation (NLT)
1 O God, listen to my cry!
Hear my prayer!
2 From the ends of the earth,
I cry to you for help
when my heart is overwhelmed.
Lead me to the towering rock of safety,
3 for you are my safe refuge,
a fortress where my enemies cannot reach me.
4 Let me live forever in your sanctuary,
safe beneath the shelter of your wings! Interlude
5 For you have heard my vows, O God.
You have given me an inheritance reserved for those who fear your name.

Nice remembrance!
I enjoyed this piece because it reminded me of my childhood.
