Pablum can never satisfy the longing of the heart for real food.
The church I attended the first half of my life fed us gristle and bone. Each minute of every day we were aware of the words spoken on Sunday. God was out to get us, and we better behave. The guidelines weren’t too clear about what exactly was considered bad. It seemed everything was.
We lived in a constant state of stress.
Then came the day I heard a pastor who presented a wonderful meal of meat. Since I had never had meat before, I began a process to discover how I could receive it; not just on Sunday but every day.
I hungered for it.
Just as there are many ways to cook various types of meat, there is more than one way to procure God’s meat. My favorites are reading the Bible and listening to men of God proclaim God’s truth. And if circumstances prevent me from ingesting the guaranteed remedy to my soul’s hunger, I experience a sensation of starvation.
My soul undergoes hunger pangs.
We are to be hungry for His word. Just as going without food would cause us to lose weight and become weak and ill, so it is when we go without God’s word. To remain a vibrant and healthy Christ-follower, we need to daily partake of His guidance and promises.
Our diet is our choice.
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” Matthew 5:6 NIV
