I hoisted my computer case into the overhead compartment and took the seat next to the window; row eight, right side of the plane. My preferred seat with Southwest Airlines.
The routine was beginning to get old. Monday morning, 6:00 am non-stop flight from St Louis, Missouri headed somewhere west. This particular week I would be working with a community bank in Marshalltown, Iowa.
I suppose that everyone questions their purpose in life from time to time. Lately, I questioned it more and more. As an empty-nester for two years, I thought this was the time in life when I could relax a bit and enjoy less responsibility. Spend time with my parents. Travel with my husband. Finish writing my book. I felt tired and worn down, like an old weathered sneaker that had ran too many miles.

I checked into the Marshalltown Holiday Inn, and before I unpacked my suitcase I honored my commitment to God. If I was going to travel all over the country, I would to do my part in making sure that His Word was available. My God assigned mission- always leave an encouraging note tucked inside the Bible for the next traveler. I checked the night stand, no Bible. The desk drawer, no Bible. A complete search of the room told me that for the first time since I began this quest, I had more to do than prayerfully compose the note.
God works in mysterious ways. His ways are not our ways.
A Google search led me to a locally-owned Christian bookstore. Stepping Stones Christian Bookstore -Main Street, Marshalltown, Iowa.
I made the ten minute drive from my hotel and parked my rental across the street from the store. Beautiful hanging baskets of brightly-colored flowers drew me to the front door. I walked inside and scanned the shelves, eager to complete my mission. A pretty blonde woman with a warm smile asked if she could help me. I explained my need for a relatively inexpensive Bible, plain-looking… the type that hotel staff would not remove from the room. She quickly jumped on board as eager as I to ensure the ministry.
We found the perfect Bible long before the conversation ended. Mindy is the owner of Stepping Stones Bookstores and she is a new friend introduced to me personally by God. Two women alike, doing our best to follow Him in a broken and wounded world. We prayed together and exchanged contact information.

I do not pretend to know God’s plans, but I’m doing my best to follow where He leads. I left Marshalltown, Iowa on Southwest flight 659 out of Des Moines only hours before a tornado ripped through the city.
Mindy and I have remained in contact. She is safe. She is thankful that God has made provisions for her and her family through the storm. Her store and vehicle were damaged, but she knows that God will provide.
