“That’s easy for you to say. You had your chance at glory. Just look at you. You exude brightness from every angle. Even your name sparkles.”
Not letting the lack of enthusiasm get to her, Stacy tried again. “Did I ever tell you about my winning year?”
Sue perked up. “I haven’t heard that story. Just that you still hold the record for the most beautiful tree-topper ever. Everyone has been trying to outshine you, but so far in 10 years no one has.”
“Well, I once was ordinary, just like you, except I wasn’t so blue. A wiser star looked past my ordinariness and shared her wisdom with me. She said ‘It is not about your color or outward appearance but about how you feel about it. If you want to be the top you need to reach for it instead of withdraw.’ She then gave me a hug and disappeared. And she was right. That is exactly what I had been doing. She left me speechless and full of sparkles. I entered the contest that year fully expecting to win and I did. That season I proudly topped the president’s tree like my life depended on it.” Stacy’s grin only got bigger at the memory.
“And everyone has been talking about it since. There’s no way I could do something like that!”
“Oh yes, you can. You are unique. How many people have ever heard of a blue star?”
“No one. Even children know that stars are supposed to be yellow.”
“Yes, well, children color hearts red because that is what they are taught. But what is the true color of the blood pumping?”
“I don’t know. But, what does that have to do with me?”
“Blue. Blood is blue. It is only when it gets oxidized that it turns red. So, if there’s blue blood why can’t there be a blue star? Just because a color is most popular for a shape doesn’t make it any more real. You are the realest star I know.”
“Thank you Stacy. I didn’t win last year but maybe that’s because I wasn’t ready? But, the question still remains. How can I make myself more beautiful? I still don’t think anyone wants to have a blue star topping their tree.”
“How about I give you a little of my silver color?”
“A silver lining? Sure.” Sue began to prance around and sing, “I’m going to look gorgeous. I’m going to look gorgeous.”
The finishing touches were done as Stacy commented, “You’re welcome. Now, isn’t that better?”
“I can’t wait to see the tree I’m going to top this year!”
“Just like I told you. If you believe it, you will receive it.”
What Stacy and Sue did not know until the contest began was that the President’s theme for his Christmas tree was blue and silver. Blue ornaments and silver tinsel. It was just waiting for a star like Sue to top it. A blue star with silver lining was perfect. Merry Christmas to all.
