“My husband completely forgot about it.” Exasperated, Lynn continued, “How could he? He knows how much Bellina loves butterflies. We talked it up for days!”
Lynn sighed and blew her nose into a tissue. Finished, she launched it across the room and reached for a clean one. Sara tried to step out but Lynn’s pleading eyes held her back.
“Please sit with me?”
“But we need more tissues.”
“Oh. Ok. It’s not like you’re going anywhere with that jerk.”
“No, of course not.”
“Bellina’s first time to the museum and he has to ruin it for her. It’s not like she will be like this forever and actually want to hang out with us.”
“No, of course not.” The mechanical response surprised Sara. Her heart pounding in her ears she tenderly tried to broach the topic brewing for days. It was not the best timing, considering the tender state of her sister’s heart, but Lynn needed to know the truth. It was now or never.
Clearing her throat she started in a whisper. “Lynn? There’s something you should know.”
“What? She saw him with who? No way! He gave up our family time for going out with that . . . that . . . that . . . woman?”
“I’m sorry to be the one to break it to you but apparently so. It seems like he doesn’t care about Bellina’s butterflies. Today is not the first time either.”
“How does she know?”
“She works at the restaurant he frequents with her.”
“I’ve never introduced the two. How does she know it’s him? Maybe she is making a huge mistake. Frequenting diners with my best friend does not sound like Tim.”
“Oh, it’s him alright. Remember that time you two had your picture in the paper? Everyone knows you now.”
“If everyone knows me than why hasn’t anyone said anything?”
“I don’t know, sis. I don’t know.”
“So, what do I do now?” Her head obviously hung in defeat, Lynn snapped it up and with wide eyes exclaimed, “Oh, Bellina. She’s so disappointed in him already.”
“Right. Bellina doesn’t know.”
“I want to trust Tim. I really do.”
“I know, sis. I know.”
Retreating to the bathroom Sara prayed for wisdom and in a flash knew exactly what to do. They were to ask Mandy to spy on Tim and Carolyn the next time the two were together at the diner. It was sure to work. Then they would know the motivation for Tim’s alleged affair.
“I know what to do.” Sara snuck back into the kitchen and explained the plan to Lynn and for the first time that evening things were starting to get brighter. They put away the ice cream, parked themselves on the couch, turned on a comedy and soon were so engrossed in the film they didn’t hear Bellina approaching.
“Mom, I can’t sleep. Your laughter is so annoying.”
“Come watch it with us sweetie. Aunt Sara will make room. Won’t you Sara?”
“Of course. It’s about time we introduced you to this great classic.”
Twenty minutes later the two women carried the sleepy girl to her bedroom and laid her on the bed.
“So, when do you think it will happen again?”
“Shh. Let’s talk outside.”
Closing the bedroom door and tiptoeing down the stairs Sara waited until Lynn was safely in the kitchen before she blurted out, “Mandy sees them on Mondays and Wednesdays. This is the first time she saw them on a Saturday.”
“We wait till Monday then and hear it directly from our personal bug.”
“Bug?”
“You know, when you put a device somewhere to listen in on a conversation?”
“Can we really say it that way?”
“Why not?”
“Oh, okay. Our bug Mandy. I like that. Please Lynn. Let me talk to her. I don’t want it to be more upsetting than it already is. Maybe I can talk some sense into him.”
Monday evening Sara called Mandy, as promised. “So, what have you got for Lynn?”
“Don’t tell her but Tim is working on a huge surprise party for her 40th birthday.”
“You mean, there’s no affair?”
“Are you kidding me? Their interactions are too tame for an affair. Tim thinks the world of his precious Lynn and Bellina too! He’ll make it up to her for skipping out on the bug museum. You’ll see.”
