The Chinese men and women on their afternoon commute refused to budge. For every step forward Alessia made she was pushed back two steps by the incoming crowd. An involuntary yelp escaped as an elbow was jammed into her ribs. Just as she managed to make it to the subway doors they slammed shut a mere inch from her nose. Why was it always the nose? She watched Rose’s eyes widen in shock. Yes, her student was on the platform and she was not. How on earth would she get back to the school now?
A calm voice of reassurance emerged from behind her.
“Don’t you know how to prepare for your exit?” a male voice in a distinctive Southern American accent drawled in English.
“I . . . I . . . have only been here two weeks,” Alessia managed to stammer, lowering her head in disgrace.
“Well, miss. I hope you know the name of your destination. And, you best be getting off at the next stop. Fortunately, that is mine too.”
The handsome stranger shielded her from the crowd with his bulging arms and just like that they were on the next platform.
“Thank you sir,” Alessia said as she finally got a good glimpse of the handsome stranger. Lo and behold, he was the one she had been admiring from across the crowded car!
“Jasin Spengler, at your service. I would shake your hand but as you can see we are not away from the crowds yet. Why don’t you come to my office and I will see if I can be of assistance.”
“Alessia Bakerson. And that would be great. Thank you. I just need a place to pull out my phone and make contact with her.”
“The one you got separated from?”
“Yes. My student Rose. We were on our way home from the Summer Palace.”
“I’m sure she must be very worried. Her pretty teacher lost in Beijing alone. Ah, here we are. We have a nice little café inside the building. Would you care to join me for a cup of coffee while we wait?”
Three weeks later
“May I take your coat Alessia?” Jasin’s tender green eyes met hers.
“You may.” Alessia settled into the plush chair at the coffee shop. “Thanks again for helping me out that afternoon. I don’t know what I would have done without you. And for teaching me how to navigate the Beijing subway commute. I never knew so many people could be jammed into one small space. Is it really true they say ‘There is always room for one more?’”
“It’s true. I have a friend with a baby and she is always complaining that people don’t see she is carrying her baby and think there is more space than there is because of the empty space in front of her face. They keep trying to pile on the bus. She has learned very quickly to defend her baby’s space. I would be afraid someone would crush my baby if I had one.” Jasin’s hands got more and more animated as he tried to describe the baby dilemma.
“That’s crazy,” Alessia responded in disbelief.
“I know. Fortunately, she knows never to take the subway during rush hour. Unlike another woman I know,” Jasin teased as he ordered their usual cappuccinos.
“Yeah. Or they would need someone like you to rescue them.” Alessia flirted right back, batting her long eyelashes at her new boyfriend.
A confident Jasin puffed up in pride, “I can do that.”
“Yes you can, Jasin. Yes, you can.” Alessia smiled as she imagined Jasin sheltering their baby on a jammed subway journey.
