He flipped on the windshield wipers as large fluffy snowflakes began to fall. “Well, it looks like the storm is coming in early tonight,” Jim said shaking his head.
“How long will it take to reach the lodge?”
Jim turned his head to answer his wife as a large deer bounded out of the forest.
“Dad!” yelled Tony from the back seat, but it was too late for his father to react. The car slammed into the massive buck and spun violently out of control on the snowy road. The car bounced off an unyielding tree, sending it toppling down the slope. It rolled side over side, then end over end. It came to rest in a rocky tomb, enveloped in the night.
Tony opened his eyes after a while. He heard nothing but the tiny clicks of snow falling on the ground outside of his broken window. Dimly, he could see his mother’s head slumped forward. He moved the pillows and blankets away from him and crawled toward her.
“Mom wake up!” He shook her; she was cold and stiff. His screams trailed into the night.
“Tony, wake up! I’m right here.” He looked up at his mother as she was grasping his shoulders. He leaned up, embracing her tightly.
“Oh thank God,” he said. “You were, you were...”
She interrupted him, “it’s okay, just a bad dream. What do we do when we have those dreams?”
He answered, “We pray, but how? What if I want to pray for dreams? Does the bible say anything about that?”
“Of course Tony, the bible has prayers for all kinds of things. Why don’t we pray for peace right now because I think that would be good, okay?”
“Sure mom.”
She prayed from Psalms 4:8
“Dear Heavenly Father, lay Tony down in peace tonight. Let him sleep well for you oh Lord, only you, can make him dwell in safety. In Jesus’ name, we pray, amen.
Later that week the same nightmare bothered Tony yet again. Though he was afraid, he now knew how to pray. He flipped on his lamp and grabbed the Gideon’s Bible that lay on the floor next to his bed. He turned to the Psalms and prayed just as his mother did. With relief settling in his heart, he laid the scriptures to his chest and drifted gently off to sleep again.
“How many days do we have before vacation?” Tony asked his dad.
Jim looked across the soapy hood of the Subaru as his son circled the car. “Three days.”
He knelt down next to his son who was now sticking his fingers in the tread of the rear tires. “Hey Tony, mom told me about your dream. You don’t have to worry about anything. They hardly ever get snow where we’re going.”
“I know dad, I’m fine. I’ve been talking to Jesus about it. Do the brakes work in the car?”
Jim stood shaking his head as Tony went off to play. Curious, he too, knelt down and checked the wear of the tires. He then pulled out a cell phone and dialed the garage. “Hi, can you get me in tomorrow? We are going on a vacation.”
As the sun dipped behind the forested peaks, Tony stared out his window. He imagined giants emerging from their caves as the peasant folk closed their doors and turned out the lights. He, though, was on a winding road that seemed to never end. He gripped his bible still praying for safety.
Snow began to hit the windshield. “What in the world, it’s not cold enough…” His father flipped on the radio.
The temperature will drop well below freezing tonight with five to ten inches possible in the mountains. So go inside, cuddle up next to a fire…
“How long will it take to reach the lodge?” asked his mother.
A whitetail deer stepped out of the woods, illuminated within the headlights. Jim hammered the brakes bringing the Subaru to a halt merely an inch away from the animal. They all just sat in stunned silence as the deer sniffed the road and trotted to the other side.
“You were right mom, prayer works for things that haven’t even happened yet.”
