Despite the coffee, Tyler’s eyes drooped. Twice, he jolted upright as his head lolled over. His phone buzzed. Tyler pushed himself up in his seat and reached for it. The message read, “He’s coming out.”
Tyler fixed his eyes upon the entrance of the office building. He dared not look away for even a second. A couple of minutes later, he saw him. Harry Goldberg emerged from the building. Slung over one arm he carried his overcoat. He shiny shoes complimented the dark grey three-piece suite he wore. He spoke on the phone as he moved onto the sidewalk and took large strides forward. His long legs propelled him down the sidewalk.
Tyler scrambled out of the car and dropped in behind Harry, careful not to be spotted. Tyler didn’t have too much trouble blending in with the throng. He did his job well, and didn’t mind this too much. It beat sitting in the car for long periods of time.
Harry lowered his phone from his ear and slipped it into his coat pocket. He walked about three blocks over, and stopped outside a restaurant. After a minute, a host led him inside.
Tyler followed suit. The host took him to a corner of the restaurant far away from Harry.
“Excuse me. Would you mind if I sat over there?” Tyler pointed to an empty table near Harry.
“Sure,” said the server, and led him to the other table.
The arrangement couldn’t be any better. Harry sat with his back towards Tyler, and Tyler could watch without fear of discovery.
Harry picked up his phone and texted for a few minutes. He pulled out some ear buds and plugged them in. Tyler could see him scrolling through a list of songs. Then he clicked out and opened an app with the familiar green background of a solitaire game.
“Oh, brother,” Tyler thought to himself. He hoped this wouldn’t drag on for a long time.
After about fifteen minutes, Harry clicked out of the solitaire game and brought up Facebook.
“Really?” Tyler rolled his eyes. He lifted his cup of coffee and drank from it.
He was thankful when a server finally brought Harry’s food to him. Harry laid his phone on the table and began to eat.
This was it! The time had come. Like a cat, Tyler stood up and stalked towards Harry on feet as light as feathers. He pulled out his phone, and, with practiced ease, gently tapped it against Harry’s phone as he walked by.
Without glancing back, he sped up and shot out the restaurant door. He moved fast, but not fast enough to draw attention to himself.
Once outside, his adrenaline scooted him down the road with speed as he bobbed between people. This was going to be big!
He got to his car and drove off. Half an hour later, he sat at the table in his apartment. He pulled out his phone, and began running some apps. Sure enough, he found Harry’s bank app and “Wallet” app. The doorbell rang.
Not thinking much of it, he walked to the door and opened it. Harry Goldberg stood there. Harry lifted his hand, revealing a badge.
Tyler’s shoulders and head dropped. He had been set up.
“Tyler Perry. You are under arrest for extortion.” A couple of uniformed officers walked in and cuffed him.
“How did you find me so quickly,” Tyler stammered.
“When you tapped my phone in the restaurant and copied it to yours, you activated a GPS tracker.”
To the police officers, Harry said, “Take him away.”
