Over the sound of the raging wind and waves Leonard heard cries from the ship,
“Come and save us! Come and save us! Our ship is sinking.”
Leonard ran to the closest house and threw the door open, shouting,
“There’s a ship sinking just outside our island. Come and help save the people.”
Someone went to the window to take a look, and said, “You’re imagining things. There’s no ship out there.”
Each neighbor whom Leonard tried to call to come to help the shipwrecked people was just as indifferent. Their complacency was a shock to him. There were people out in the waves dying, and no one cared enough to help.
Leonard ran up and down the shore looking for some way to go and help those desperate people. In a secluded cove, he found a small white rowing boat and jumped into it and rowed out towards the ship.
He was able to help just a handful of people out of the waves when he realized his boat was too small to take any more. He looked at the sinking ship and saw the desperation in the faces of people from numerous nations. It seemed as though they were from every country in the world.
The vision faded, and he realized that God had shown him the hopelessness of the people and the nations who did not know His plan of salvation. The Lord asked, “Who will go and tell the nations of my love and the redemption prepared for them?”
“Here I am. Send me. I will go, even if everyone else is nonchalant. I am ready, even if I must go alone.”
No one had expected that just weeks later he would be on his way alone to China. The vision of God’s love and concern burned within him to the end of his life.
His experience through the years was that the opposite of love is not always hate, it is indifference.
