This time it was hard to leave. This time he wasn't that angry seventeen year old boy swearing at his parents, and promising them he would never return. This time he was a broken man.
It had taken forty-nine years for him to take off his wading boots and to get out of the pig-slop that he had called life.
He tightened his grip on the steering wheel, staring up at the strange clouds, which looked like upside down burnt muffins. “Must be some strange weather brewing,” he surmised.
Then his mind returned to what had brought him to his senses in the first place. He had seen this homeless woman walk by his street a few times. But on that day she had been down right eerie. She had pushed her rusty old grocery cart right up the alley and had stood outside of his shack.
“Go home Gordy,” she had yelled close to his open window. “Go home.” Her words had been louder and even stronger than all the pent up guilt inside of him.
He had stared out the window. The poor thing was bent over, wrinkled, her hair unkempt. And, she had missing teeth.
He had answered back. “But I can't. I haven't even spoken to my mom in these forty-nine years. I didn't even go home when I got the message my dad was dying. I forsook them both.”
“Your mom is waiting for you. She never gave up on you. Go home Gordy.”
Gordy pulled into a gas station.
“I have to thank that old woman just as soon as I get back,” he whispered as he got out to pump gas into his car.
Gordy had gone home, and he would never forget that day.
His mom had been expecting him. In fact, just as he had turned into the driveway, she had been running down the dusty path to meet him. And, though she had grown old, her arms had been strong as they had gathered him in.
“I am so sorry mom,” he had cried on her. “I've lost everything. I have lost everyone. I haven't even seen my boy since he was a baby.”
He had sobbed on and on for awhile before he asked her, “How did you know I was coming home.”
“I prayed every day of those forty-nine years for you to come home,” she had said, her voice choking up from tears. “And I knew God had sent an angel to call you home. I just knew it. And son,” she had added, “I met your boy, my sweet grand baby, Danny, when he was twelve years old. His mom brought him here to see me. I haven't seen him since, but I have been praying. And, I know God will send an angel to lead you to him, too.”
Gordy got back in his car, and dabbed his eyes with a handkerchief. “And Lord, thank you for getting me home that day. It was a miraculous vacation. Now I just agree with my mom in prayer. Let me find Danny.”
The churning clouds began to spout out rain. It was seven o'clock in the evening. He had been driving most of the day. Hopefully he would get to the city within a couple hours.
He turned the windshield wipers on to full speed.
Out of nowhere he saw her! An old woman was standing in the middle of the road. He slammed on his breaks! His heart was beating drums!
He jumped out of his car. “Are you out of your mind? I could have ran you over!”
She stood there sopped and wet. Then he recognized her. The homeless woman! “What?” he asked. “Why are you here?”
She pointed down the hill. “Go down there. A young man needs you. Go quickly.”
Without asking more questions, Gordy scurried down the hill. While blinded by the rain, he tripped twice and twisted his ankle before noticing the lone figure leaning over a big rock.
Gordy came closer. The young man was weeping and holding a pistol.
“Wait!” Gordy cried out. “Don't harm yourself. I'm here to help you.”
“It's too late for help. I've made a mess out of my life. I have nobody to live for.”
Gordy felt a mysterious presence. He looked up to see the homeless woman standing near them.
“Danny,” she was saying, “Go home with your dad. He's here for you now.”
