Being best friends we’re basically in each other’s pocket. We like it that way since there is no other experience we can draw from; we’ve always been together. After graduating from college, much to our delight we got jobs in the same building – different firms but same building! Sally worked on the fifth floor while I worked on the eighth. We shared an apartment and life was as perfect as it could be until our little sisterhood was interrupted.
Sally had gotten engaged, she was getting married in less than six months – and they were moving to California!
“You’re acting as if you didn’t know that Robert and I would get married some day.” She was very poised.
“Not really. It’s not that – I’m happy for you, sis. It’s just that California is several hundreds of miles away.” I whined.
She extended her arms to me. “Come here, you poor thing.” As we hugged she said, I’ll tell you what we’ll do.”
Quickly pulling away, with a raised eyebrow, I questioned what was on her mind. “What? I can’t move in with you guys.”
“Of course not, silly! I wasn’t planning on you going anywhere.” She was shaking her head laughing. “Remember how we swore that if we ever had to live apart then we would each get a pet that the other one likes?”
Memories from that night in summer camp when we were placed in different dormitories came flooding back. It was our first time sleeping under different roofs and we didn’t like it. The following morning we pleaded with the camp director and she was kind enough to make the switch. After which, needless to say, we had a great camp!
Sally was a cat person and I was a dog person. Later that week we went to the pet store down the street to pick each other’s favorite pet. I got a brown-patched tabby American Shorthair that would remind me of my sister’s playfulness and independence while she got a black and white Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. She thought it would remind her of my quietness. We named the cat Cali (for California) and the dog, Missy (for Missouri) – and so the pet pact was made. Apart from phone calls, emails and so on, this would be our other way to stay connected. Oh the fineness of sisterly love!
Days went by fast. Finally Sally, Robert and Missy relocated. I was left with the playful but wonderful companion, Cali. I was beginning to ease into my new life when five months into it, there was an interruption again, and I learned that where brethren dwell in harmony they experience blessings numerous as the drops of dew, but that is a story for another day.
