“It May Take a Global Vegetarian Movement to Combat Climate Change – It may be impossible to reach the U.N.’s goals without significant changes in global diet, a new study finds.”
April 2020.
The doctor had warned Mary that a pregnancy would imperil the life of her child. “Abort it. You can’t keep it alive.”
She refused. Her faith in God and His value for all life gave her hope that He would prevail – somehow.
Mary gave birth to a healthy baby boy she named Daniel, after her husband whom the government had sent to prison for subversive activities. He had preached the gospel on the streets. When he spoke of God’s love for everyone, even those who sinned through their homosexual lifestyle, he offended many who passed by hand-in-hand. The police came. He was charged with inciting hatred and undermining government unity. The judge sentenced him to ten years of hard labor.
At first her milk flowed. But it wasn’t long before the doctor’s prediction came true. Her breasts began to produce less milk each day. She needed to supplement her breast milk. Mary began to panic.
The UN decree six years ago had begun a global coalescing of agreement by world governments. They came together under UN auspices, declaring as one that climate change must be overcome for the earth to exist. The continuation of the life of the planet depended on defeating global warming. It must be cooled. Because cow flatulence was the primary source of methane that contributed to carbon dioxide and excessive warming, all cows must be eliminated throughout the world.
The government of India protested the most. Cows were sacred to Hindus; the thought of destroying their gods was a tough sell, with UN troops needed to quell the riots. Every other nation did its part. The concentrated four-year eradication of all cattle worldwide ended with one last cow that a rancher in Wyoming had hidden. The UN declared success. The world would now have its best chance to cool. The earth was saved.
In their zeal to save the planet the heads of state neglected to consider the unintended consequences that might result, and did. The absence of cows caused worldwide hunger. There was no meat, milk, or cheese for the greater populations everywhere. Starvation became rampant. People died.
Mary had prayed she might produce the needed milk for Daniel in its absence on store shelves. When her breast milk waned she sought out other nursing mothers. In their fear they couldn’t part with any excess, instead storing what they had for that day they might be in Mary’s plight.
She tracked down every alternative source such as goat’s milk, even vegetable based, such as soy. Always too little, too late. Lines that snaked block after block formed at any store where rumor indicated a sighting of milk substitute. Mary never arrived in time.
The child grew thinner. Daniel couldn’t exist on the trickle that Mary produced. She prayed. Nothing. She petitioned the authorities. They assured her the earth was healing.
Because the IRS had declared churches for-profit entities and local governments subsequently taxed them out of existence, Mary had no place to turn. She yearned for the time the church had been a home of community, prayer, and comfort.
Daniel died at her breast, trying with one last breath to obtain a final drop of milk that wasn’t there. Mary wept. She had pleaded with God for mercy for her son. He hadn’t answered.
She buried the boy in her back yard. No one cared but her. No one would seek answers as to his death. It was the way of the world.
The first uprisings began on the streets of a small town in Ohio. They spread. People took to the streets. They stormed public buildings. Well-armed police units tried to contain them. The National Guard, then full military deployment. They were impossible odds, yet the rebellion grew. Bodies lay stacked by the roads. The hungering masses wouldn’t stop. They were dead anyway. Might as well quicken the process.
As the turmoil continued, life became even cheaper than before. And Mary realized: at some point God would intervene. He had allowed this to happen as punishment to a rebellious people who had become a stench in His nostrils. Mary saw as well that Her son had been given a great mercy. God took him and saved him from the wrath of God to come.
