The quiet hum of a well tuned automobile, going on its way. Then blatantly broken by the harsh
roar of a heavy truck, and quiet again once more comes. But, a jet plane goes over a little too
low, breaking the silence by its ear busting whine.
A baby cooing as the mother hums softly a lullaby of love. Both at peace, and in love.
Sitting alone on a stump, quietly waiting just as King David said, Be still and know God. Blending
in, causing no fear, the sounds come. A rabbit scampers across the dell, softly rustling the leaves.
Mother squirrel comes out on a limb nearly over your head and squalls a complaint that you are
too close to her baby in its nest. Then satisfied that you mean no harm she returns to the nest.
A doe, magic in beauty, appears and stares at you, unsure of your intent. I moved slightly and
suddenly she is gone, sailing over the ground, the thump of her feet softly hitting the ground,
fading in the distance.
Looking over a wheat field, a wind bends the wheat toward me, sending a message to the trees.
And the trees pick it up, their leaves broadcasting a melody of wonder at it all.
And quietly I remain soaking in the melodies of nature. Calming me, the tension leaves, and my
inner self becomes peaceful, an accepted part of nature, responding to its melodies of
togetherness. Soon gone are the tense frictions of competition, or just survival, and my soul
smiles in relief.
Shortly I come to realize that God is indeed love, that His creation is for mankind's benefit. But I
must stop, turn off the conflict on Television and Radio, lay aside the Newspaper, and tune in, if I
am to hear, see, and feel His love given through His natural world. For it is then that I learn of the
melodies sung unceasingly by nature. It is at such moments that I learn the benefits of "Be still
and know God." It is then that I learn of the power and beauty of God's work.
