Of Eden’s paradise
Did You pause and look upon the wood
Of Your coming sacrifice?
When the Godhead walked with Adam
And earth was fertile brown?
Did you see a thorn bush growing
That would one day form a crown?
Did Your heart contract with sorrow
When man did not conceive
That he would choose rebellion
And the serpent would deceive?
When Calvary’s Hill, Your hand did mould
Of rich brown earth and rock
Did You see the Bulls of Bashan
As they gathered there to mock?
When autumn leaves of dripping gold
To earthly brown, did fall
Did you see the battered bleeding Lamb
Redemption’s price for all?
And did the weeping mother
Whose heart was pierced with sword
Cause Father Son and Holy Ghost
To grieve with One accord?
It’s all from wonder that I ask -
Your plan in part concealed
You held Redemption in Your heart
Till the Son would be revealed.
I know –
O God Most Holy
As Love, You did come down
And on a splintered wooden cross
Red mingled with the brown. (184 words)
