“Darcy!”
“Yes, Melanie.”
“Why don’t we ever go swimming anymore?”
“Things have changed. We’re older now.”
“Darcy!”
“What is it now, Melanie?”
“Do you think this is all there is?”
“What do you mean, ‘is this all there is’? What else could there be?”
“Haven’t you tried to imagine something more? A new beginning?”
“Whatever are you talking about Melanie? If there was something more we wouldn’t have to imagine it. We’d know it. Besides, if there could be a new beginning it would mean the end of all we know.”
“And how would we know it? Darcy. What if these eyes could see things that defy language? What if these tongues could taste things that make the mind tingle with delight? What if these ears could hear things that made our spirits soar with feelings beyond our wildest dreams? What if these hands were made to hold and feel things that made us feel loved and warm and special? What if these feet were made to move us in ways we couldn’t even hope for?”
“Melanie, before you begin any more craziness let’s end this conversation. Let’s just face reality. All we have is here and now. All we have is you and me.”
“But what if there’s someone else?”
“Like who? Check around, there aren’t a lot of options.”
“Sometimes I dream that there could be a Mother.”
“A Mother? Why in the world would you believe in a Mother?”
“I just think that there must be someone who can hold me and love me and make me feel safe. I feel like there must be someone who can show me everything I need to know.”
“Melanie, you and I are just fine without a Mother. We’ve never needed one until now. Why would you even dream of a Mother?"
“Well, I got to wondering why when I stretch out my hand or my foot that I get poked. At first I thought it must be you but then I realized it wasn’t. The only thing I could imagine is a Mother.”
“You know that’s happened to me. At first I thought it was you just trying to make more womb for yourself. Surely, you can’t be saying there could be someone more than us all around us. What do you think a Mother could be like?”
“Darcy, I just don’t know but I think a Mother must be dark and wet and stretchy and hardly ever quiet. A Mother must be able to know what you’re thinking and feeling without any conversation at all. A Mother makes you feel peaceful and contented and just a little bit squeezed.”
“I imagine that a Mother would be everything we didn’t know here. I still have a hard time believing there’s anyone or anything besides here.”
“Darcy!”
“Yes, Melanie.”
“Why don’t we ever go swimming anymore?”
“Things have changed. We’re older now. This nursing home doesn’t have a pool.”

“Sometimes I dream that there could be a Father.”
“A Father? Why in heavens would you believe in a Father?”
“I just think that there must be someone who can hold me and love me and make me feel safe. I feel like there must be someone who can show me everything I need to know.”
“Melanie, somewhere, somehow, let’s begin at the end of all we know. If there was a Father what would he be like?”
