It's just that the timing's all wrong
A few weeks later I'd have penned
Much more than this "might have been" song.
This entry's due on June the twelfth
-No doubt that's a very fine day-
But our big fam'ly gathering
Will still be two long days away.
So that's the reason I can't write
How beautiful Breckenridge looked
Nor can I sing the praises of
The lodge that my niece-in-law booked.
You'll never know just how things went
Not so great? Okay? Like Heaven?
With more than thirty characters
Sharing space for twenty-seven.
I can't paint vivid pictures of
Both young and old playing Twister
Or of certain shy ones hiding
From my camera-wielding sister.
There'll be no blow-by-blow account
Of each opinion-filled battle
Nor will you know if my bad back
Could keep me out of a saddle.
You'll have to wonder what went 'round
In "White Elephant" exchanges
(You know there'll be lots of laughter
That's one thing that never changes!)
You'll miss out on all the stories
Of Granny and her feisty ways
Of "Puffy Sue," and favorite quotes
Mellowed treasures from long-gone days.
You'll be left out of the game called
"Who Goes With Which Baby Pictures?"
You won't play "Liverpool," or other
Games that are family fixtures.
You'll have to imagine mountains
Framing us like we're a painting
Picture yourself way up there, but
Don't look down, if prone to fainting!
I hope I haven't spoiled your fun
By telling you all that you've missed
"Deadlines," they tell me, "are deadlines"
The editors simply insist!
