It was 7 am on April 13, 2003. It was one of those breezy days, somehow grim,
with special clouds which always keep me guessing. Yet as calm and peaceful as that day was, I flinched at the least sound .
I was seated on the beautiful front balcony of our home. With a hot cup of tea in one hand, I had the other hand on my Devotional, “Meditation Moments” on the page designated for that morning.
The reading was from Isaiah 30:18
“And therefore will the Lord wait that he may be gracious unto you…blessed are all they that wait for him”
I was greatly absorbed in rejoicing over the text in my book….I voiced my desire saying,
“I wonder Lord what it is You will grant me today….You KNOW very well, how I live on Your daily surprises! Lord I’d like to have a puppy”
“Is this all you are asking God for?” inquired my husband Bill smiling, as he had then joined me. .
“Yes.” I replied. “This is my desire. Once before when I asked God, for guard dogs, He gave our family two of the strangest ones: Tamra and Cruiser. Surely you remember… this was back in Africa long before the Lord destined to move us to this Continent. You see, I feel safe here. There is no need, for “sentinels.” I am simply longing for a pet for companionship”
“Why, what was the problem with those last dogs we had in Africa?” Bill asked wondering.
“I do not deny they were good guards. When guests came to see us, they were welcome as long as they came loaded with packages in their hands. Cruiser would wag his tail and not even bark once. But WOE unto the visitors who left carrying any object with them. Then both dogs would snarl and growl out with deafening barking. Once Tamra, with her teeth, grabbed one of the leaving guests by the ankle till it bled. ”
We both laughed as we dwelt on those times of dog-loyalty by which we were blessed for years. While we talked, we still heard that unmistakable funny barking in the background. It was low but stubborn. We could not even tell where it came from.
“But let me be frank and ask”Bill went on, “Do you think we are able to care for a dog? This is a great responsibility for both of us: Waking up in the nights-- at least twice, having to take it out! Think of its daily care..feeding..grooming..sicknesses.. check-ups etc---etc---”
“Well, I know God will give me a dog. I am positive that He will also grant it to me through a miracle---How to cope with the habits, needs and whims is His business. Please Bill do not ask me when or how! Just trust Him” I defended myself.
Having ended our conversation…it just dawned on us both, that the barking came from our daughter’s home, next door. We know they have no dogs…yet the barking truly seemed so near to us.
In an unexpected moment, coming toward us was the most unexpected surprise! We saw the loveliest white-furred dog, a Bishon Frise such as I had never seen before!
Our daughter Magda proudly followed behind it whistling and calling “Fluffy! Fluffy…Sit! That’s right…Good boy.”
Fluffy was a good boy indeed! It jumped right into my lap and was very still…looking up at me with the friendliest expressions on its beautiful God-given face. It had the gentlest deep, moving eyes, sleepy and brown-rimmed above its black nose and black mouth. It stared right into my eyes. The face and body were immensely attractive with the tidiest and most thoroughly groomed white fur!
There and then we bonded with much love for Fluffy.
The next voice I recalled hearing was Magda’s.
“Mother, this is Fluffy. We got it last night. It is two years old, house-trained, and is a happy dog. You always tell us that the best is yet to come. Right?”
She then continued with the most astonishing offer:
“IF YOU LIKE, BOTH OUR FAMILIES CAN SHARE FLUFFY!”
“We shall have the full responsibility of caring for it financially and otherwise.
You and Dad may have Fluffy and enjoy it only during the daytime and according to your schedules…How about that”
With the greatest thanksgiving all I could joyfully utter was: To our God be all glory!
To our God be all glory! To our God be all glory! Amen.
