Once upon a time there was a little girl who lived in Oklahoma. She had blonde hair and big brown eyes that sparkled with laughter. Her Grandpa Williams called her “Little Britches.”
She lived on a farm with her two brothers and four sisters They were all old enough to go to school. They had a horse, cow, bull, several goats, three coon dogs, and two barn cats. Most important was Linda’s dog, Spunky.
Linda’s mommy decided to go back to school too. What was Linda going to do while everyone else was gone to school? She wasn’t old enough to go.
Her Mommy had a wonderful idea! Since she had learned to be a good little girl and knew how to sit quiet in church she was sure she could do the same in Mommy’s college classes.
Mommy’s teachers weren’t so sure an almost three year old could be that good. Linda knew she could be good and make her Mommy and the teachers proud of her.
Finally the big day came for Linda and Mommy to start to college school. They walked into class hand in hand. Linda was real excited. She loved being the only little girl in class. All
of Mommy’s classmates smiled at her and told her how cute and sweet she was. She loved having papers and pencils like the big kids.
Linda loved riding in their old car. It was fun to ride down the road with Mommy. They had so much fun singing songs and sharing stories on the way to school. Sometimes she was sleepy and took a nap on the way home from college.
One morning they woke up and it was very cold. Linda ran to the front room window and saw
that it was snowing great big snowflakes. The wind was blowing very hard. Linda was afraid
they wouldn’t get to go to school because the car heater was broken. But, Mommy wasn’t worried. She dressed Linda in so many warm clothes she wobbled when she walked. She only left a little peek hole for her to peek out at everybody. Winter was a very exciting time.
Before she knew it the birds were out singing. The flowers and tress were blooming. Instead of being all bundled up Linda’s mommy got out her spring clothes and her sandals. One of the special things Mommy did was pack them a picnic lunch everyday. Linda got to have her very own little brown bag with the special treats Mommy made for her. She loved having their picnic lunches out under the big college trees.
Linda had so much fun going to school with Mommy. It was hard to believe so much time had passed and that she was 4 ½ years old now.
Summers were really fun because they had some time off from college. She got to have extra time to play with her older brothers and sisters. One of the most fun things was to spend time with Grandpa Williams. They would feed all of the animals while her brothers would milk the goats and the cow.
This one summer day the big kids were busy talking about what grade they were going to be in when school started. Linda knew she wasn’t old enough to go to public school yet. But, it wasn’t any fun to be left out of their conversation. She jumped up from where she was playing, placed her hands on her hips and declared, “When I get out of college I’m going to kindergarten!” The big kids didn’t argue with her because they knew she was telling the truth.
Linda finished her one more school year at college with Mommy. Before she knew it she was getting up and heading off to school with the big kids. She was glad her Mommy had taught her how to obey the rules and be polite. She had got to have a wonderful time going to school with Mommy. Now she was going to have a wonderful time going to kindergarten.
