It's springtime here and the kitchen window looks out over the side yard. There's a light breeze this morning and it has carried the scent of the lilacs into the house. Looking out the window, the crabapple tree is the first thing that catches my eye. It was on the land when we moved in, but it was much smaller than it is now. Today it is a towering, majestic tree. It's branches are loaded with fruit, making it a perfect home for the gray squirrels and the birds. It's not without danger, however. There is a perfect spot on one of the branches for the cats to sit and make their plans.
Carl and I used to joke about that tree, and we couldn’t wait for it to get big enough to cast a shade. There are still two garden chairs waiting patiently beneath it’s branches today. I look at the tree, then at his picture on the sill, and whisper, "Would you like to sit outside with me?"
The bushes on the property line always make me smile. The lady that used to live next door would nag my husband about his smoking. He finally told me one day, "I don't care what you plant there, but make sure they're big enough to block her house." And they are. As much as I hated his smoking, I find myself missing the smell of cigars.
A whiff of the lilacs catches me again, and memories play in my mind. Our four year old daughter, with dogwood blooms in her hair, helping us tamp the dirt around the new lilac bush. She looks past me at the azaleas in front of the house and I can see her making plans for the blooms. Carl and I look at each other and smile, contented. Rustling sounds coming from the magnolia tree lets me know where our son is. I catch sight of him peering through the leaves at me, Tarzan style. I smile at him, and my daughter finally figures out where he is. The azaleas are safe. She heads for Tarzan’s tree instead.
Drying off my hands, I pick up my praise journal and head for the door. I think much better when I'm sitting in a tree. And I believe I know the perfect one.

tree. Just watch out for the use of it's. It often slips past the spell checker. Only use the apostrophe when joining It and is. But you knew that, hey!
