Topic: Shopping (03/01/07)
I’m a little out of step with my family. My two daughters love to shop. My son’s girlfriend loves to shop. Even my husband loves to shop. But I – the “lady of the house” – do not enjoy it.

I haven’t always disliked shopping. When I was a teenager, back in the early 70’s, shopping was recreation. After all, when everything you try on looks good, who doesn’t enjoy it? I wore a size “small” in everything and looked good in any color. And I was in that target age group fashion designers aim for.

Before I could drive, I’d walk to the local shopping center for an afternoon of wandering up and down every aisle with friends. Once we had drivers’ licenses, we’d drive to the mall and do the same thing. We didn’t have to buy anything – shopping wasn’t necessarily actually purchasing – we just wandered and tried on.

But now that I’m an adult, I shop from necessity. I grocery shop because we need to eat. I shop for my kids’ clothes because they shouldn’t walk around naked. I shop for myself only when and if I need something. I no longer wear a “small” in anything, many colors don’t seem to go with my graying hair, and I’m definitely no longer in the fashion designers’ target age group! And when I do shop, I usually curl up with a latte, a catalog, and my telephone. Forget trying on clothes in those tiny cubicles with all those lights!

I still love to get together with my friends. We might go to the mall and roam through the shops, buying something for our houses, our husbands, or our kids. We are more likely to end up sitting in a coffee shop, sipping lattes and talking. That’s a lot more fun than trying on clothes that look better on younger, thinner women.

Sounds like there's a problem of "burn out" here. I understand completely. Been there, done that! Interesting take here.

The beginning was cute and grabbed my attention. I could relate to this piece in many ways. I enjoyed the humor, especially the reason you shop for your kid's clothes. I would like to have seen this expanded some, but otherwise a very enjoyable read.
