“I love you!” are well known to be the most important words anyone can ever say or hear. They are words that make the hearer feel important to someone; they wipe out loneliness and instantly give strength and warmth. But there are three other words almost as significant: “Come on in!”
To the homeless, it means shelter and hope of a better future; it means protection from the harshness of potential illness through hypothermia. It means dignity instead of poor personal presentation and rock bottom self-esteem.
To the heart-broken it is an open ear and an open heart. It is someone who cares enough to put aside something that was previously being dealt with and take time to allow a fellow sufferer to offload some hurt.
To the teenage single mother, “Come on in”, means more than just a free meal and someone to give them a break from the screaming infant with the runny nose. It means time to be looked after herself; time to kick back and be just what she is – a scared teenager on the run from the perceived tyrant that is life. It gives her time to say, “I can go on if you help me, but I can’t make it on my own. Please see past my rebellion and forgive my appearance. I just need to be loved.”
“Come on in!” is that heart-felt invitation from the Father of the fatherless and the Protector of orphans. He invites us to enter into His presence and leave our burdens at the door. He calls us to sit down, listen, stand up and walk around, basically make ourselves at home and explore the endless parameters of His love.
“Come on in!” is His proud announcement to the faithful friend and lifelong companion who has been His devoted disciple and believer. “You did a great job! Well done! Your awful suffering has amassed great wealth in heaven. Come on in. Enjoy it all! Soak up the warmth; delight in the worship. Welcome home!”
Yes. Come on in. There’s a place here for you. The Father of the prodigals is the One whose heart goes out to each of us in all our circumstances and beckons us to enter into His joy; to lean on His strength and to leave our sorrows At His feet.
