Thankfully, he’s six months old. A gray and white kitten named Patrick, he’s still young enough to be taught basic dog tricks like “sit” and “stay”, although his attention span is barely that of a small child’s. Unless, of course, there’s a fish-flavored treat waved above his nose. Patrick eagerly complies with the first command, almost salivating for the taste of his reward. His gray eyes affirm mischief, and he jumps for that treat before it is given away. He gobbles it when it falls to the carpet.

Two other cats watch nearby. They’re older, and they’re females. The oldest is a black-and-white dubbed Kitty Cat, the other a brindle called Munchkin. Kitty Cat generally rules this little club formed by her masters, but it is Munchkin who takes the advantage. Every now and then Kitty Cat might get her taste of a treat, pending Munchkin doesn’t get to it first. The mistress, aware of this impromptu audience, puts down a few to distract Patrick while she gives the “girls” one each.

Kitty Cat and Munchkin gingerly sniff the food in front of them, considering their want for it. Patrick has consumed his, and smells about for more. He’s already eyeballed the uneaten pieces. Greedily he devours Kitty Cat’s. He carefully inches toward Munchkin’s speck, ready to gulp it down when a low growl stops him. The fierce gaze of the brindle’s yellow eyes is intent on the intruder’s extended paw. Ears twitch, tails flick; a hiss, a growl and a blunt thump startle him.

He shakes his head, looks at Munchkin, and backs away. He still has his eye intent on that treat, which she wittingly licks and gnaws. Another attempt drives him to Kitty Cat’s side with his pride barely intact. She abandons him for the warmth of the couch.

Patrick strides to his mistress’s feet. Without any prodding he sits on his haunches, holds his head up, and patiently waits for his reward. The loud, rumbling purr is met by a gentle pat to his head, and one more treat. Though Munchkin has long abandoned hers, he knows better.

“Good kitty. Sit, sit, staaay. That’s it, Patrick! You’re a good boy!”
